Apparently red = negative now?..

I cut in half a two-core DC5525 male-female extension cable to splice in an LC filter. My computer didn't come back to life after plugging it in, and then a few seconds later... BOOM!

Naturally my first thought was that I'd fitted the capacitors the wrong way round. Nope, the cable uses red as negative and white as positive. I didn't think to check that the barrel matched the colours as I've literally never encountered this before in my life, but you learn something new every day apparently!

RIP two new Panasonic FMs 😞 Fortunately my system and power supply are OK

Can't trust premade cables anymore, who would've thought they used red for GND when that was always the black wire, or the shield in a coax cable; we always assume red (or any bright color)=positive, black=GND or negative as that was a de facto standard
Always doucle check continuity with multimeter or this happens:

thats the same as chinese usb cables.
japan likes to use white and yellow.
always check these things!
