    Machine - reset pass code

    Hi All

First post here, hope to get a steer on an electronic problem. A friend of mine runs a beauty salon on her own and purchased a machine a few years ago - square box around 30" x 12" x 5". Paid a lot of money for it which she didnt really have.

About 2 months ago it suddenly prompted for a pass code. The firm has gone bust and there is no way of her getting a code or support. I'm from a software background, but said I'd take a look, only thing I could think of trying was seeing if there was a cmos battery, and removing it to see if it would reset.

Opened the box and was amazed to find only one very simple circuit board! I can see a battery but it appears to be secured by a weld. Before I force it out, I'd appreciate if anyone thinks it's worth a shot. Can post photos if it helps.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, and really appreciate any feedback.

Re: Machine - reset pass code

Sorry, you're correct lack of info in my first post .

For make & model there's not much to go on - the machine is called "Microlift" and bar a serial number there's nothing else I can find. Tried Google etc of course but nothing.

      Attached a few photos:-

1 - The message that displays which is "System Code 18 - Press any ket to continue". When you do it looks for a code.

      2 - The Microlift box

3 & 4 - Two pics of the only circuit board. You can see the battery which is standing upright. I've no idea on the rest, but doesn't look to be much there.

If I can send on anything else that may help please let me know. And thanks for the VERY quick response vinceroger69...

Does she has any user manual? What does it do or what is it used for? It looks like facial treatment machine from around 2003.

Re: Machine - reset pass code

I'll check re: manual but don't think so. It is a facial / body toner (whatever that means) and yes, looks like 2003 alright! Probably why I can't find anything to do with it on Google etc.

She was using this fine up to a few months ago, but one day, switched it on and it started looking for.a code. Only thing I can think to try is to take out the battery and see? There's no jumpers etc. would be nice to help her out cos she spent a lot on it and hasn't had much in the way of luck recently...

The design looks pretty old, I would guess late 90s. I'm not sure what it does, given there looks to be very little inside of it... There looks to be a socketed device which might be an EEPROM for settings and two microcontrollers, one for the display and one for everything else, I am guessing.
Looks like it has two wires for electrodes, some kind of electro-therapy nonsense as we've seen before here?

the battery is probably flat for a start.

it looks like a glorified TENS unit btw.

BTW, did you check the voltage on the battery? It is more than 10 years old so I will not be surprised if it is dead.

Probably, the image above showing the PCB text includes the battery close up - it appears to be welded to the two vertical metal flaps so will require a bit of force.

Sorry, not sure how to, more of a software slant than hardware. IBut I guess you're right, chances are it's dead, unfortunately it's welded rather than a simple clip.

Yeah you're right in it is some electro-therapy thing. Check out the link from goontron - that's the exact same machine.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. Guess my last question now is should I yank the battery and try a new one as doesn't appear any other option?

                                    NO!

that's a pcb mounted battery - the tabs are part of it.
you replace the whole thing with another - or a socket.

you need to get the part number etc from the battery so we know if it's a disposable lithium, or a lithium-thionyl rechargable.
