Caps, correct spec wrong size question

    Hi,

There are a couple of bulging caps on some of my equipment they are 470uf 25v 10mm x 16mm. I have some new caps which are 470uf 25v 8mm x 15mm.

Will these work or should I use caps which are identical in size?

    Thanks

The size does not matter, but the rating does.
You need to compare ESR & ripple with these caps from their datasheets.

We need to know the specifics, what equipment and where these caps are in the circuit. High resolution top down pictures of the PCB might help.

Generally speaking, replacement will a better quality capacitor so the problem is less likely to reoccur, does not leave much room to downsize the capacitor diameter.

However this does not necessarily mean you need the exact same size either. Use the largest diameter with the same lead spacing that will fit in the available space. Use the tallest capacitor with equal or better ESR & ripple that will fit in the available space without too extreme an increase in capacitance.

These are just generalizations, but there is seldom a good reason to use a smaller diameter capacitor unless it is a situation of practicality, that the equipment is worth almost nothing so you are just using parts you already have to save a few dollars.

        Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I do have some identical caps in the post but I just wondered for future reference.

Where would be the best place to find datasheets for caps please? I did google the cap number (21IGS) but I didn't see anything specifically identifying it.

They are for a PSU from inside a TV, its only a cheap TV but i'd sooner fix it than replace it.

I'll try to get a picture soon but I have no camera at the moment.

        Thanks for the help

Find the datasheet by identifying the manufacturer and product line, or at least manufacturer then see if they have pictures. 21IGS might be a production or date code rather than make and model identification.

For the PSU circuit it's probably part of a switching supply filter and should be as low ESR as the budget reasonably allows, and also 105C temperature rating. If that is the case then you don't necessarily need a datasheet, would instead see what is available in low ESR major brands from your preferred supplier.

For TV repair, PANASONIC FM/FC/FR will be good for it.

Surely there is a brand or logo at least? GS might be series code.
