    Professional repaired PFC

Got this PFC thingy from CCFL Ikea lamp with the plug pushed inside. Obviously somebody tried to fix that with this

Well, the thing is, it is only a huge coil, output is still 230 V. Does the lamp even need it? My guess is not

    Re: Professional repaired PFC

It appeares to actually be a 1:1 transformer. Well, does the lamp even need such a thing? Yeah, it has some high starting currents, but as long as the CCFL is only 11 W I don't think it would be so drastic to pull breakers or something. On the other hand, efficiency of these huge low-frequency transformers is low as we now so it is wasting power all the time the lamp is on. Not mentioning the space

ADD// OK, practical test shows the spikes are enormous One burned CCFL and one pulled breaker. OK, will attach cable to that transofmer and be done

Is it ISOLATION transformer? May be they worry about safety.

Seems that kind of. As long as startup currents for CCFL are so high, the transformer prevents that. Thats also the reason these lamps always blink several times before they start: the spikes reduce voltage on secondary. But after couple of tries the electrodes stay warm enough for it to start.

That is my deduction at least

If the lamp blinks a couple times, then it sounds like they are using old design with ballast transformer with a starter circuits in stead of electronics driven to light the lamps.
What does the rest of the lamp assembly look like?

            Re: Professional repaired PFC

It is G23 so ofc there is no high-frequency starter (no room in the CCFL). From disasembly of the destroyed CCFL I learned there are two components, one which looks like a piece of coil and second most likely starter. Both actually fused in glass, most likely as an insulation.

That is an old style starter/ballast setup.

Help on Samsung Syncmaster T220 dead ccfl lamp
                  by mikey5791
                  Hi,

This monitor previously is my main working monitor which i have been using for 8~9 years. Yesterday, when i switched on my pc from fresh to power on, the monitor is just black no display. I started dismantle to look inside the monitor power board but nothing looks suspicious or burnt. So i took my external ccfl inverter to try to power the monitor ccfl lamps which consisted of 2 lamps on upper part and 2 lamps on the lower part.

Found out the upper ccfl lamp which is supposed to connect to cn304 on the power board did not light up. Then i installed a used working...

HANNSG Hi221 -- 2 secs to black feat. CCFL flicker & "burn" marks on power board
                  by ttmi100x
                  Greetings everyone,

I have a HANNSG Hi221 monitor that exhibits two seconds to black issues (backlight goes off, display is still on as confirmed by shining a flashlight on it) with some additional oddities...

The monitor failed on me with a standard "2 seconds to black" some time ago prompting me to initially replace most of the electrolytic capacitors (some of them were bulging/leaking).
Things kinda sorta worked for a night, then the problem returned along with some flickering and "buzzing" noises.

                  Upon closer inspection...

Epson 5040UB Projector No Lamp Strike Stuck in Startup - Blinking Status/Lamp Lights
                  by vestaviascott
Hoping someone here can put me on the right track. I'm trying to troubleshoot/flowchart the "internal projector error" on my newly acquired Facebook Marketplace bought Epson 5040UB projector (3LED, not DLP). Owner said it needed new lamp, actually error code blink pattern indicates "Internal Projector Error, call Epson support". Unit is out of warranty as of 8/19

                  Here's what happens:

                  1) Power on
                  2) Blue power indicator lights and the lens cover motor opens the lens cover, light fan noise heard
                  3) Blue status light flashes for appx 4 minutes...

BenQ TH681 Originally overheating now wont fire the lamp - Colour wheel not starting
                  by AJ847.63e
                  Hi All.

Does anyone have any reference materials or something I can use to try troubleshooting a BenQ TH681? Google unfortunately has turned up zip. I did find a service manual for a W series BenQ but that is pretty much useless, it's more a glorified user manual. A list of voltages would be great as I suspect my mainboard is faulty, the colour wheel voltage is not dipping like it should.

The one I am troubleshooting now was originally overheating after a lamp replacement. It originally would take 2 minutes or so for it to shut off and blink the temp and lamp lights...

test active pfc power with lamp test
                  by khelane
                  Hello
I have a big problem and that is that in some cases when repairing active pfc power supplies I cannot work with a test lamp. I can only get help with 5 volts standby and for starting and starting I have to work without a lamp and this way there is a possibility of parts exploding and other parts being added.
Sometimes with a multimeter test the problems can be reduced to some extent, but I had several cases that had to be tested on and online and recently two varistors exploded. They had terrible resistance because the power supplies were over 800 watts.
                  Is there a way...
