Sorry if this was already asked... newbie question about the types of capacitors

First of all -THANKS TO EVERYONE here. Nice of all of you to fight the insanity of multi-hundreds of bucks to fix things. Like paying $800-$2000 for a new TV when all you need to do is replace the capacitors on the power supply.

That is where I am. I found references to the model TV I have (a PolaROID - as in hemmeroid). It ran fine, and many on the net have reported the same problems -- the display dims from some lights not coming on, then goes black. The problem takes a few days to weeks to go completely bad.

So, I found this site. I am a network engineer though, not an electronics engineer. So I know capacitors discharge like so and that once i got a frog's (Gastroc nemus?) nerve to fire like a capacitor in a lab but that's it.

I have a handfull of obviously bad caps (the top is bulged). I am trying to replace them but going online I see lots of options. One is a Samxon 220uF 450V HP (M) 105 C capacitor. I can find lots of 220uF 450V caps out there. But no "HM (M)" ones. I noticed on this site's FAQ that there are some different types, ie:

    Nichicon : PM , PW , HE , HD , HV , HM , HN , HZ
    http://www.nichicon.co.jp

So, after this typical Generation X diatribe, my question is can I just replace this Power supply cap (Samxon 220uF 450V) with any 220uF 450V capacitor? The next question is SHOULD I replace it with the same brand and what not.

Some here will get very scientific about what caps to put in. I dont. I just stay away from the usual failure caps like capxon and go with it. Nichicon's work well for me. I do suggest only 105 degree caps.

Yes you can change it with whatever you like. The main filter cap isn't too critical anyway - just use a 105C cap and it'll be fine.

Long version: Get datasheets and compare ESR and ripple current ratings - the replacements need to have at least the same rating or higher. However when you can't find datasheets, you just drop in whatever you have around and if it works you're good.

      A working TV? How boring!

        You're little list here:
        Nichicon : PM , PW , HE , HD , HV , HM , HN , HZ
        are all low ESR caps.
You don't need a low ESR cap for the maind filter cap.
Choose one with the right uF and volts with the best [highest] Ripple rating.

The Ripple rating is effectively it's current rating.
Tells you how much Ripple current it can handle without overheating.
Higher Ripple number => more heavy duty.
