To Hakko 937 holders! adjusting tolerance? Changing from F to C?help!

    Hi!

I've just received a second-hand hakko 937 and first thing to do on my list was to test it. The temperature adjusting works fine. But when it came to adjusing/calibrating temperature and tolerance or changing form F to C, I got stuck because I couldn't enter the parameter mode to change tolerance (level at which it starts beeping due to temperature going low). I know it sounds silly. )) The manual says I should hold up and down arrows when switching it on until C or F appears on display... Well, I have tried doing it with and without key being inserted holding both bottons up to a minute! And nothing happens. The only difference is when I turn it on with the key it goes straight into adjusting temperature. And when it is not there, it displays 11 (I don`t know what it means) and then starts powering the iron by displaying temperature increase on display! Hakkousa is useless: the product has been discontinued together with support.

How long do I need to hold both buttons or ... any constructive advise.... as I`m lost.

Am I doing anything wrong or is it just not working?

    Thank you!

Hopefully someone on here can help you... I would but unfortunately I haven't even seen a 937.

Thank you for your reply. All your tips I had already explored before starting this thread. ))
        Now the whole story!
Today I have found out that my brother bought it via alibaba from China. When I contacted the company which sold it for 75$ (Dongguan Fuyida Electrical Appliance Co., Ltd. - http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs...olesalers.html) they told me that it was me who couldn't hold both buttons still for 5 sec )), but then confirmed that this Hakko 937 doesn't have that function! Could you believe that? Then I took the cover off to look what is inside and realised that it has nothing similar to HAKKO 937 part B2036 chip!! (http://www.hakkousa.com/AHPDirect/images/B2036.jpg). I was stunned!
I decided to ship it back, but realised that it would take at least 56 days to wait for refund and I would have to pay another 30$ from my pocket praying for item return safely to China or claim compensation. Therefore, told my brother to live with that, but leave negative feedback for supplier:

The Hakko 937 I have bought from this seller. Is not actually Hakko 937 (the PCB inside is not B2036!). It doesn't have an option of calibrating at room temperature. Therefore, you would have to buy 191 sensor separately. Another 12$. Secondly, the heating-error function is also disabled (it won't blink when the soldering temperature drops below certain level). Thirdly, as it is not B2036 inside, I honestly doubt its performance capability. Finally, when I received it the casing cracked, I was offered to glue chipped plastic casing. After few days of talking to friendly support, I decided not to return this item as it would cost me another 30$ to send it back via Royal Mail and I would have to wait another 56 days at least for a refund.

Outcome: I should have bought original used Hakko 937 from ebay. Please beware, non of alibaba shops offer original Hakko with all functions (I have checked while looking for replacement) although they all advertise it as Hakko 937.

Personally, I don't have anything against alibaba, but it devastating that people could sell items which are a copy even include a manual of original Hakko 937 when it is not Hakko!

LOL. I have just realised that my post sounds like "don't buy form China!" or "I work for Hakko". Non of it is true though.

So basically he bought a cheap clone and it doesn't work like the real thing... I am not surprised really.

A pity but that's life. I guess it must work to some degree though, so at least it's probably not totally useless. Personally, I'd keep it.

My Duratech Hakko copy doesn't work too well on motherboards, but the good variety of tips available for it on eBay means I think I will find it useful for other things in any case.

Would be interesting to see what the internals look like anyway.

Can we have some pictures of the fake board?

Hakko's are expensive and as such there are plenty of knockoffs out there.

If the price looks to good to be true then it probably is.

The Chinese also like to make Hakko knockoff irons with cheaper wirewound heating elements which won't have as tight of a temperature tolerance.

To make matters worse the thermistor used as part of the closed loop circuit to regulate the temperature isn't the same value as the official Hakko element. So you can't simply buy a genuine Hakko handle and plug it in to the knockoff.

There are plentiful of clone soldering irons, some are priced as little as 1/8 the cost price of a Hakko 936 / 937.

I dont see the reason why you ordered the soldering iron from China when you are from UK. UK has a big suppy of good used soldering equipment.

Because the one from China was probably cheaper

I wonder if it was even a 'real' Hakko knockoff... read here: http://www.sunkko.com/sunkko_e/views.asp?hw_id=1464

                  **Friendly Note**
There is serious fake SUNKKO in China market. All buyers please order SUNKKO via us (SUNKKO Producer) directly to make sure the products are real and original SUNKKO quality, function and safety.
So these Sunkko guys (who are obviously a Hakko ripoff) appear to think there are even ripoffs of their ripoff - whether that is just a lie to make you buy their product I have no idea, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.

Or, are they just admitting that Sunkko is fake?

They are proud to be the original fakes and anyone else is just a cheap copy.
