    Premiere recap complete - MSI K7T Turbo-RAID v3

    This MB started acting up a year ago, with no video on boot. Had to reset several times before the graphics initialized. About the same time, a second board, Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus! began to exhibit CRC errors, and while searching the net for answers, I stumbled upon this site. More about the Soyo later, next project.
    When inspecting the MSI board, I could see two vented caps, Chhsi 2700 uF, adjacent to the AGP slot, and two slightly bulging 3900 uF TEAPO:s on top by the power connector. The rest showed no visible signs of being bad.
    Finally, after training on some trashed boards, I got up the nerve to get the recap underway. Removing the old caps was relatively easy, with the exception of the ones situated between the PCI slots, with the holes perpendicular to the slots. Soldering the new ones wasn't much of an issue either. The really difficult part was to clear the holes. I tried with a stainless steel dental pick, but it was very difficult to get it through. With a sewing needle, it was much easier. Perhaps the needle soak up less heat. In a couple of tight spots, I had to soak up a short with solder wick. A powerful magnifier, I use one with 8x, helps here.
    One lesson to be learned however. I almost ruined it, when I got careless and broke a trace. Add to the commandment list: "Thou shalt not ever position the tip of the soldering iron across a trace." I was able to fix that with a crude but functional repair, see attached picture.
    Anyway, now the board has 15 new caps, 2x3900 uF replacing the TEAPO:s, 2x2700 uF replacing the Chhsi:s and 2x470 uF by the USB ports, also replacing a couple of Chhsi:s, all of those Panasonic FC. Also nine new 1000 uF Rubycon ZLH, replacing the Tayeh:s originally on the board. The four 4700 uF UCC KZE around the CPU socket I decided to leave, as they look fine, and are from a reputable manufacturer.
    It POST:ed on the first attempt, the voltages are rock solid, within 2% of nominal values, all the PCI slots work, tested with a PCI graphics card, the USB ports work and the board has completed 10 hours each of Memtest and Sandra runs without problems. I'm a little astonished that I actually pulled this off. I could never have succeeded without the information from this website. Simply invaluable.

    i know the feeling....... welcome to the club.

    pity about the trace, perhaps next time it will be a perfect job, good work fixing it though.

    what iron are you using?

    anyway i have found it necessary to change technique for different holes. i have several kinds of needles. if i have problems i will add solder to both sides of the board and put the corner of iron into the hole on both sides for a second, then try to get the needle some way in on one side while heating from that side, then change and heat from the other side to push it all the way through. depends on the board though. newer boards are difficult.

      I'm using a Solomon SR-976 ESD 50 watt soldering station with electronic temperature control. Alternating between a 4mm and 1mm beveled tip. Not the most expensive, but it gets the job done.

        Nice job , and kudos on the trace repair, that HAD to be nerve wrecking. I almost did the same thing and found out early on that the pointed tip on the iron in combination with having it laying down was not going to cut the mustard. What i did was grind a slight "chisel" shape to the tip to get more surface area contacting the solder joint. This also allowed me to more or less stand the iron up to keep the heat off of adjacent areas. Magnifiers are a must for my 51 year old eyes also.

        The voltages are pretty much unchanged ,after the recap, for the Biostar I did.
        From the BIOS: Vcore 1.41 1200 celeron tualatin which is supposed to be 1.47 i believe. 2.5v is 2.41 3.3v is 3.14 5.00v is 4.89 12v is 11.49. From a software monitor the readings are a little better for what that's worth. Vcore 1.48 2.5v is 2.47 3.3 is 3.27 5.00v is 4.89 and 12v is 11.89. I dont know if the low voltages I.m getting are a concern or not ,or what to do about it if it is. LOL At any rate if you feel as i do after your first recap ,you're thinking....the next one will be easier.

          looks good. a good price for ESD safe. especially if it really can get above 450oC. i recommend 2mm chisel, i can do any job with that. unfortunately they dont offer that anyway good choice.

          i want to start a list of cheap irons that work. so if anyone else has recommendations then please advise.

          What i did was grind a slight "chisel" shape to the tip
          its not really recommended, if you expose the soft copper core. anyway YMMV

            Dood has had good luck with the Weller WLC100, only $50 here.

              iirc the 2mm screwdriver tip for the mcm tennma station will fit the soloman.the tenma is oemed by soloman.

                Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
                This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

                So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

                I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

                Just want to know is there some common method to protect needle from crashing to end, if the meter is galvanometer or microampermeter with both side movement, needle in center?

                If it comes to fast and high unbalance on bridge, the needle was smash and bent. Some electronic circuit might help but it should not interference with measurement if value is in ok range....

                Help a noob! Wson8 Pogo/Needle Adapters to read/Write

                Hi all,

                I had recently tried to reflash the bios on a dell latittude that has a Wson8 Chip however to no avail.

                My question is, Has anyone had much success using the Pogo/Needle adapters to read and write bios without removing the chip from the main board?

                I seem to struggling with the solder process wofh my reflow station and currently have 4 machines waiting for a bios mod/reflash.

                For context I have just ordered a EZP2019 SPI flash so this is what I would be using alongside the Pogo Adapter.

                Apologies if this is the wrong subcategory....
