Re: Disable page file?
The RAM disk program I mentioned can utilize RAM above 4GB for use as a RAM disk on 32-bit OS:es (!) Can be quite useful.

Re: Disable page file?
It does, but with lots of installed RAM, 6 - 8 GB or more, you can easily allocate say 500-1000 MB of it for the RAM disk, to put a small swap file and windows temp files, and still have plenty left for programs. Haven't run out of RAM yet....

Re: Disable page file?
You can put the pagefile in a RAM disk. Did that in my main rig with 8GB of RAM using a RAM disk program available for free at http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk.
Works like a charm.Re: Disable page file?

... like a charm.Re: Disable page file?

Advice regarding Antec Truepower 430 recap
I'm in the process of recapping my first and also last Antec PSU, a Truepower 430. The replacements, Samxon RS, for the six Fuhjyyu secondaries are already ordered. The unit is however "blessed" with two Fuhjyyu LH 200V 470uF primaries as well. Do they stay, or do they go?
If they go, I can source locally as replacement for them Rubycon MXC. They have the correct physical dimensions to fit, and are rated for 1450 mA ripple. The Fuhjyyu's rating, according to their spec sheet is 1620 mA, but as they have a smaller can size than standard, 25x30mm, that figure could be overrated....

Re: Recommended STABLE Motherboard?
Good choice! Have had a GA-EX58-UD3R, a similar board for just over a year now. Very happy with it. Before that, I had a GA-965P-DS3 for two years. Very happy with that board too....Last edited by Sudum Gumudu; 01-05-2011, 12:24 PM.

Re: suggestions for a cheap but sturdy case
How about this http://www.compucase.de/en/produkte/pc-gehaeuse/atx-midi-tower/produktansicht-allround/compucaseproduct//6a21-1.html .
I have four of them, and they have, IMO excellent quality/price ratio. 2 120mm case fan positions and air intake dust filter.Re: suggestions for a cheap but stur... quality/price

Re: New found hatred for Western Digital....
It makes you wonder if the ICHxxR Intel RAID controllers are especially fussy or unreliable with desktop harddrives. I ran my last computer with a RAID 10 array on a Promise 4200 with two Maxtor and two WD 250:s SATA 150 without any problems....

Re: New found hatred for Western Digital....
Why is it, when you need to do your homework, you fail to. Had I known about this, I would never have purchased four WD Black 640GB drives for my nwe computer build to use in a RAID 10 array on the MB onboard Intel ICH10R.
There has been nothing but problems. Constant rebuilds, which take forever on such a large array, and always a SMART event which needs to have the disk status reset. I'm sick and tired of it....

Re: Moving up.
I'm running Win 7 x64 on an i7 920 with 6GB RAM and a Nvidia GTX285. Once I figured out how to get a decent refresh rate on a CRT screen, I'm extremely pleased with it.

Re: Exterminating the elusive gremlin
I, for one, have no beef with Creative Labs or their products. I have used their products almost exclusively in every computer I've owned, since the Soundblaster 1.5 in my first 386SX25 up to the current i7 920 with an X-Fi.
Have always been pleased with them. For gaming, there's no substitute for EAX. But they want their own IRQ. As long as they have it, they'll behave.

Re: Exterminating the elusive gremlin
Creative Labs audiocards do not like at all to share its IRQ with other devices. Other audiocards possibly too. Check the boot-up screen if the audiocard "multimedia device" get its own.
Had a similar problem once, but my comp would bluescreen instead. Moved the audiocard, an Audigy to another PCI slot, and never had a problem since.

Re: Old computers still in use
I have an old Micronics 486 DX2/66 that I still use from time to time for retrogaming. These old DOS titles are best played on such hardware, speed-wise and also with genuine audio hardware such as an AWE32 and a Roland LAPC1 card.
I'm toying with the idea to get hold of a 16 MHz 386 for the really old stuff, which run less than optimal on the 486 with slowdown techniques of various kinds. An interesting project to be sure. My first PC was a 25 MHz 386SX, which I don't have anymore.

Re: Win7 sucks as gaming platform with CRT screen?
I recently have made some discoveries:
1. The EDID override monitor driver .ini file was the key after all. Without me noticing, somehow it was replaced by the Generic non-PnP monitor driver. That would also allow optimal refresh in the Windows environment, that's why I didn't notice the change. All games however would run at 60Hz no matter what.
2. Some games, including Neverwinter Nights 2, the one I chose to test Win7 game CRT screen handling with, defaults to 60Hz unless you manually edit an entry...
