    Turn 7 into Xp...sort of....

Changing the Windows 7 Taskbar to XP/Vista Style
To revert back to the older style, the first thing you'll need to do is
right-click on any open area of the taskbar and choose Properties from the menu.

From the Taskbar buttons drop-down menu, you'll want to choose “Never combine”,
which will make every window show up as a separate button on the taskbar, or you
could choose “Combine when taskbar is full”, which does just like it says.

Now you should see the buttons show up with text labels like you are probably
used to… but in the Windows 7 style.

If you chose the “Use small icons” checkbox in the properties screen, the
taskbar will actually shrink down to look very similar to Vista.

The only problem is that the “pinned” icons are still sitting on the taskbar,
which isn't the same as Vista or XP, but you can easily remove all of them by
right-clicking and choosing “Unpin this program from taskbar”.

And now the taskbar looks and works very similarly to Windows Vista:

If you wanted to be really silly, you can choose the “Windows Classic” theme
under the Desktop \ Personalize section… but that would be taking it a little
    too far, I think.

I strongly urge you to at least give the new Windows 7 taskbar a try… it takes a
little getting used to, but it's really a nice move forward. Does the new “dock
style” taskbar work for you? Tell us in the comments.

" Tried it and it works!" I love good old Xp. 7 is ok but this is the fix I was looking for. Now 7 works or doesn't work how ever you look at it just the way I wanted it to.

but i love the 7 taskbar!

i HATED the combined tabs in XP but the preview in 7 totally makes up for that.
i'm not sure if it works if you don't use Aero though.

I don't need a fancy OS. I'm only on 7 right now because my Xp install on the other hard drive is broken. I'll fix it some day soon. All this thing is used for is the net and burning DVD's. Xp is fine for this.

I was annoyed with the Windows 7 start menu at first but I love it now.

Especially the search menu in every folder makes it a snap to find certain files quickly.

I still hate how they restructured the control panel though. Like how Add/Remove Programs became Programs And Features. Sure just make a simple function sound as vague as possible.
Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

Junk Parts, Have you found a way to revert back to XP's memory usage? (~180MB for a new install of XP vs ~800MB for windows 7 or ~1GB for vistrash)

Actually, if I was to get Windows 7 for my computers, one of the first things I would do is set it with the Windows Classic theme and turn off all animations and other flashy stuff. Not that I don't like the Win7 style (I do), but I still prefer the simpler look of Windows Classic theme (it saves a lot of resources, too).

but was not as bad as vista.. i tried that for about 1 day and hated it so bad that i never used it again.. and that was after i turned UAC off too.. that was one of the most annoying features i have ever seen.. 7 i like though.. just some minor things like some things that you can not get to without the search feature or really digging.. and example of that would be the power management console.. One thing i did find with 7 that i did not like. the way that UAC control works. If you have a program that does not work, or should i say made for 7, (looking at self extracting programs), if you dont turn off UAC in 7, a lot of programs when you try to install them, then extract, then nothing. UAC keeps them from going any farther. Turn off UAC, and they install fine though.. They should have made UAC work better with older self extracting programs.

For those that dont know, UAC = User Access Control and can be found in the user accounts settings.. both on vista and 7

                      Windows 11 Start menu/Taskbar hanging
                      by reformatt
Couple of Windows 11 machines have come in this week with the same issue. After you login, the taskbar will not appear (or just be a black bar). No access to Start Menu. Task Manager (use CTL+SHIFT+ESC) works, however the Performance stats seem stuck with CPU on 100% for Task Manager itself. Trying to exit Task Manager result in it hanging as well. No issue if you boot into Safe Mode.

First machine, tried many things to no avail (System Restore from last Windows update, rebooting in Diag mode, trying to reinstall Windows Apps via Powershell). In the end, I did an in-place upgrade...
