I'm such a packrat, I forget what I even have most of the time. A few weeks ago, I was cleaning off the desk in the back office and found the guts for this bad boy hiding under a bunch of boxes and bubblewrap......
It's a Xeon 3.06, 4gb RAM, and 3ware SATA RAID controller... I figured why waste such horsepower, so I stuck it in a nice new Antec 3U rack mount case and tossed a couple WD 500gb RE blacks in it (in a raid1). Great little server, that cost me nothing except the cost of the HDD's. I took the board (Supermicro X5DAL-G), CPU's and RAM on a labor trade to recap some other stuff for a client. The 3ware controller was in a junk box with a bunch of other crap, which I don't rightly remember where it came from. Put all together and running nicely with FC9 and going to head to the datacenter...

....and we can't forget about this little gem, which came in another box of junk I bought at an auction from a debunked computer shop about a year ago, the above mentioned Supermicro board was sitting on top of this box on my backoffice desk.
The board was still sealed in the bag (never used or opened), CPU's are Opteron 285's (2.60GHz, dual core), which were in the box with the board in their protective cases. No ram came with it, I just stuck a couple spares in it to test the board and CPU's, which work great. I paid $5.00 for it all, and some other stuff that came with it, which wasn't really worth mentioning (various PSU's, video cards, NIC's, and sound cards). I love going to auctions with computer illiterate locals. The auctioneer was just pointing at boxes, nobody there had a clue what was in them or what any of it really even is. Locals see "auction at bankrupt PC shop", they think they'll get a bargain on whole computers, but haven't the foggiest clue what a box of parts are worth.... They'll bid some worthless beat up but complete Dell system to some insanely high price, but won't bid 10 bucks on a box with 2000 bucks worth of parts in it, its so great!! I rummage through as many as I could before the bidding started, so I'd have a vague idea if there was anything worth buying....
This one will also find its way into one of those Antec 3U rack cases, with 8gb of RAM, and some kind of creative SATA2 raid..... One of these two will likely be the next badcaps.net server. Our current server is a simple dual core P4.

Ok, boring Friday night......I know I'll find more stuff like this if I dig more.....but that takes effort, so that's all for now.
