    Conformal Coatings

Quick question here. What base type conformal coatings do motherboard and other computer parts use. Is it arcrylic, polyurethane or epoxies. I looked everywhere and can't find a motherboard manufaturer that brings up what type of coatings they use. I know that certain pcb applications in the elements use silicone and polyurethane types. Some are cured by air, heat UV and sometimes water soulible. Since computer parts change all the time. Wouldn't it be wize to use arcrylic? But why not polyurethane beause of thermal cycles? I don't get it.

    Re: Conformal Coatings

i'v never seen a coated motherboard.

you know that what your talking about coats everything including the components & soldering right?
it's nasty stuff - usually only used on stuff exposed to rain or salt-water.
stuff like engine-management / generator regulators / payfones etc.

I'm reaching back to the old days here before our time. I think that they used to use a clear lacqeur then they sprayed speep lanolin on top of that on the PCB. My brother would know the answer to this one as he restores old radios and the like for a living. He is on this site too but I don't know how often he stops in or what his handle is on here.

          Re: Conformal Coatings

It's the coating on the board itself. How durable is the stuff? From what I have read its a lacquer varnish. But whats the base? Not a conformal coating. If so then how do they make diffrent colors like black and red?

Lacquer can have pigments added to it to make it any color under the rainbow.

Conformal coating on Samsung U32D970 monitor PSU, do I need to replace after repair?
              by psyduck
I have a Samsung U32D970 monitor from 2015 I pulled out of the bad hardware pile that turned on and then turned itself back off after a few minutes of use and refused to turn back on. The PSU has part number BN44-00786A, and I found a couple posts about one that had blown with damage to the MOSFETs and PWM controller - but nothing about intermittent failures. I started a new thread and said that I would refresh the solder joints on the board to see if it was just a bad connection and possibly replace the PWM and PFC ICs. I then asked what my next course of action would be after those steps. I...

Conform Coatings Application On Motherboard /Circuit board
              by LENOVO-A880
              Hi Badcapers,
Would like to ask I'm having a few boards which some are memory modules PC100/PC133, motherboard from Acer Aspire V76M desktop system, wireless card and laptop memory modules which are not working properly likely due to minor shorts causing crashes on systems. Can any light conformal coatings usage in aerosol/spray mode be used on these circuits boards as a protective layer/film to prevent from dusty environment? What kind of brands available out there will be specialised for insulating boards against chemical or corrosive attack? THANK YOU..

Tower T548006 battery, fault on BMS board
              by spleenharvester
I have two of these spotwash machines. They are portable systems that use a 12V power tool battery consisting of three 18650 cells. One of the batteries recently failed. 12V appears at the terminals but there appears to be a fault condition - machine flashes LEDs when you attempt to power up. When you plug in the battery directly (the machine charges through a USB-C port, but there is a second USB-C port on the battery itself for some reason that can also be used for charging), the green LED lights and a dim red LED lights next to it solid. By comparison, a working battery will flash green only....

Whirlpool PACF212HP W portable air conditioner, upper fan only turns slowly.
              by spleenharvester
I just acquired this portable aircon, history unknown. Its behaviour is quite strange:
              • When turned on and placed into cooling mode, the upper fan (cold air out) just spins slowly. The compressor and lower fan do not run.
              • If the device is then placed into heating mode and then back into cooling mode, the lower fan and compressor kick in and start cooling, but the upper fan still only spins slowly.
              • If the device is placed into fan-only mode, the upper fan does not respond to low/medium/high speed toggles - just keeps running slowly.
              • Display and buttons all behave normally aside from the

This is a fancy milk frother, apparently almost identical to the Dualit DMF2, but sold at a big mark up as bring particularly suitable for making frothy hot chocolat. It's basically a small jug with a kettle type resistive element in the base, and in the centre of that a small motor holding a magnet which locks on to a magnet in the base of a stirrer inside the jug which spins and froths up whatever liquid is inside.

I've got one and it's not working. I've checked all the obvious things. The heater coil has continuity, as do the two thermal fuses and the motor windings. The temperature...
