Nah, it's too drastic. My buddy needs a PSU, so I'll be selling him my AcBel for $15 (he doesn't care about the noise) and buying both the 400w Delta and the 400w HiPro. Whichever one I like best will go in my system, the other will go in the downstairs HP to replace the 7 year old Bestec in it.

Bought the Delta PSU (along with a couple goodies), will keep you guys updated on what effect it has on how loud my system is.

Though it's a good idea. Would really only work if you have a newer case with the completely open area for the psu, most of the old cheaper ones out line the fan and the plug covering up the fan's screws.

New PSU (the Delta 400w that 370 linked to) comes in Friday.

I might do a full recap later on and banish those Ltecs and CrapXons, but for now I will just be happy to have a quiet PC. I'm also kinda discouraged by johnnyguru's article where he recapped a CWT-built Antec and the ripple actually went UP.

Well, thats not going to be the case with all power supplies. Just make sure ESR matches or exceeds as well as ripple current. Maybe move up a bit in uf.

if you're afraid of that, find replacements that are EXACTLY the same(esp. the esr), without the "or exceeds" portion.
but there is a "settling-in" factor that that article didn't take into account, ie they didn't wait for those caps to settle in there...
so that article is not really a law of physics or alike...heh

i just ordered fortron that probaby has capxon, any you know what?
i won't be touching it while it works ok.
if/when problems occur i'll do something about it.

i4004, you're assuming the junk caps were rated correctly at the factory. My guess would be that they were not.

If you're going to do that, you need to measure the actual capacitance, and ESR, of the caps out of the unit, when new, and match that.
A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

                                exactly.
i didn't really say one should trust mfrs numbers.

time to settle-in aside, that's another error of that test at jonnyguru; there was no test of old vs. new.
it really would be interesting to see esr and capacitance numbers for old and new, AND THEN esr and capacitance after few tens of hrs of work(for new caps).

i've found a convenient way to measure capacitance (with analog meter on ohm range...it's a matter of comparing readings of few good ones and then writing down the deflection it reaches) and i'll measure some crap caps in this respect, but i think i'll find stuff we already know: if esr is ok, capacitance should be too....if not, capacitance will probably also suffer...
ie blown cap probably has decreased capacity.

also, given that capacitance tolerance is usually 20-30% one doesn't need to be ultra precise....

The new Delta came in a day early (props to FedEx).

It's.... so.... QUIET!!!! The AcBel was definitely the sole noisemaker in my PC.

And now, to fix the "2-seconds-to-black" Dell E172FPb I found for free on Craigslist....

                                            Hi everyone,

I have been doing hardware repair as a hobby for some years now and recently decided to learn about repairing laptops as a fun challenge.

I managed to get my hands on a "HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec2523nd" notebook that only shows a white power LED and doesnt respond to anything.

After initial testing I concluded the bios seems to be corrupted since all voltages are normal and there are no shorts. HP has a feature for a bios restore from USB with winkey+B for this model. This did not work.

I have desoldered the bios chip (GigaDevice...

                                            Hello!

First want to thank folks on this forum (Toasty, etc) for the very useful info I've found here that has allowed me to repair a PowerMac G4 MDD Samsung power supply and get this ACBel one working better!

I got a PowerMac G4 MDD for free as it was dead (not booting at all). I was able to confirm it was it's ACBel power supply as another (above mentioned Samsung) power supply works ok with the system.

With this ACBel power supply installed, the system would not boot at all, no power light blink, nothing. I've gone ahead and replaced the "12...

                                            Hi all,

I made a big-ass mess here of my father's beloved P602, and I'm trying to figure out if I should order a batch of overpriced ribbons or if I'd just be throwing more good money at the bad.

He woke up recently to a bunch of white bars going down the right side of the screen. From what I'd seen in these places, I figured the T-con board has gone out or has a bad connection. I took the back off and gently poked at the socketed ribbons and sure enough, got the image back. It was mainly the far left ribbon, and it would snap back to stripes if I let off the pressure....

Hey all, was wanting to know what cheapest option is for programming EC chips such as the MEC5107-LJ

i searched online and found such programmers as the SVOD4, Vertyanov Successor , and the RT809h type but didn’t see this particular BGA EC chips listed? So hoping for some advice here , cheers.

                                            Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice or opinions on what to do with a monitor issue I’ve run into. Apologies in advance is this crossovers a few forum categories.

I have a Dell U3425WE, which I've recently replaced with another model. That said, the original unit is still fully functional in terms of the display — it works perfectly over HDMI and DisplayPort. However, the USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 ports have stopped functioning correctly. The Issue:
                                            • The 90W Thunderbolt 4 port (circled in the photo) no longer charges or powers any device, including laptops or MacBooks.
