Unless you propose something that can eat a dual quad-core CPU Nehalem Xeon server system alive. And LEGALLY run OSX.

Because that's what the modern Mac Pro is.
Which I'm gonna get someday. Meantime, this here ancient Dual dual-core Mac Pro 1.1 is OK.

I guess Xp Home is on my pc just so it can start up with a nice background pic with icons for what I do use. For the internet I have FireFox, and AOL. For CD/DVD copy work I have Nero 7, and DVDFab 6. To watch DVD's I use Power DVD. I would like to try that OSX but I don't know how to make that happen on this Dell or the Hp Compaq at this time. When ever my pc ends up toast its always the windows install that has become broken for its own reasons....Billy what the hell have you done to my PC!

EULAs aren't all that legally binding. Its a civil matter anyway. Its not even copyright infringement if you buy the damn thing.

              Hi JunkParts!

Oh, there's all kinds of stuff about running Mac OS on modern Intel systems.
They often call it OSX86 or MACOSX86. The machine that it's on is called a Hackintosh.

I'd recommend using one of the better Linux distros though. Some of them can be made to appear Mac like.

                Hi JunkParts!

They often call it OSX86 or MACOSX86. It isn't that hard to do because Apple isn't all paranoid about theft of software like MS is.
Some of the Hackintoshes are pretty good. The better ones usually have a similar CPU/Chipset to various real Macs such as a Core2Duo/ i945 which was used on the Mac Mini and some MacBooks. I'm sure someone out there has probably done a Dual Xeon Hackintosh too.
My preference for (and support of) real Macs appears to irritate some of that crowd. a bit.

I'd recommend using one of the better Linux distros though. Some of them can be made to appear Mac like with a far wider range of computer systems such as AMDs and non Core-based Intels. You would still get a lot of the UNIX benefits, just not much Mac software compatiblity.
(Yes, I know that peeps have cracked OSX for AMD, etc, but the preferred system remains Core-based)

                Have Fun!
                Keri

PS. Why not try a Mac Mini?
The previous generation Mini can be bought brand new for under $400 if you know how to shop or try an older one like a G4 which often go begging on the Bay.

I voted Fedora / Redhat, but I'm typing this up from an MSI Wind running OSX. It runs great on this Intel Atom based system!

I will build my HackenTosh someday in the future. Right now I'm on a Dell with a 3.06 Hyperthreading CPU, and 4 gigs of RAM. I'm not pressed to say the least for anything. I'd just love to try out OSX one day in the future on this "PC"

Only problems I've had.. even on unsupported AMD is that there are no graphics drivers for the cards I have. That means no quartz and it looks like windows in safe mode. Works just fine in Vmware though.

My preferred os is BeOS: simple but advanced for the time (journaled file system with unlimited attributes, SMP support up to 32 cpus, clean design with pretty good performances), it was intended to replace Mac OS Classic aka System in late '90s; when Jobs returned to Apple and based OS X on Nextstep, then Be tried to contact PC OEMs for preinstalling it near to Windows 9x: Microsoft threated manifacturers by enforcing the Windows boot manager (which de facto disabled dual booting), then Be went bankrupt and Palm bought the remains. OpenBeOS, now Haiku, aims to reimplement a BeOS-compatible and -like os from scratch, but it's still a long time before completion and the then innovative parts (e.g. real time indexing, per-application audio mixer, ...) are now more and more common.

                                    Yay!

Apple is set to release the next OSX called "Snow Leopard".
                                    http://www.apple.com/macosx/

This OS looks to be more 64-bit than Leopard is and is mostly intended to appear as a major update to Leopard rather than a completely new OS.

However, Snow Leopard has some startling new technical features, namely:

Grand Central, where the OS handles the threading of multi-core processors. (I think that means it's better than Programs having to do that?)

OpenCL where the OS can harness the power of Graphics processors for other tasks. (More CPU power on demand?)

The march towards total 64-bit computing goes on, with Snow going even more 64-bit than Leopard. (Oh no! I hope Adobe isn't snoozing this time)

Last, there is an awful lot of chatter about the new ZFS file system with total data integrity. It's going in Snow Leopard Server and rumored for consumers too.

As is Apple's way, they are probably going to phase out support for older processors and programs. That usually means that the new stuff works better as the OS doesn't have to emulate antiques like MS does.

They are also likely to keep the price modest at $129. I hope they don't get any funny ideas about serial numbers or activations .... the lack of that junk is one of my favorite Leopard features.

                                    Have fun,

But I played with a hackentosh today and it seemed to be very smooth, It was running ubuntu. So I may build one of the micro or mini macs to run XP and use as my new media server. I've put ubuntu PPC on a mac mini and it was good to go right out of the box. Limited set of hardware, go figure. Hackintosh would be a commodity hardware pc running OSX. The other way around is just a mac running whatever. You still got robbed buying the hardware from apple.

The march towards total 64-bit computing goes on
And here I was running Server 2003 64 and linux mint 64 all this time. Since like what, 2006?

Grand Central Dispatch - NT Executive which is already in vista and server 2003, already did this. Your fancy new gizmo just makes it easier for developers to use multiple cores when coding for snow leopard. Until they decide to use it, you get jack shit.

Plus this is being made by Nvidia/ATI so a linux/windows version will happen.

Don't forget that quad socket motherboards are for servers: now most people have a computer with a dual or quad core cpu, 10 years ago they had a single core one and a 32 processors cluster was something unheard in small to mid server kingdom. It simply meant you could run BeOS on your expensive dual socket workstation without worrying about drivers and programs SMP awareness and compatibility.

This found its way to my workbench this week.

                                            Wired Wall Light Cam S100

The buyer thought he got a great deal but it turns out it was likely dead and the seller tried to get anything they could for it by passing it off on an unsuspecting buyer.
Rather than tossing it in the bin he gave it to me to play with as he knows how much I love to try to solve problems like these.

The camera portion of this device worked fine when powered via USB but when on the mains it would not work at all.
This reminded me of the eufy floodlight...

                                            Hi There!
I'm trying to help my friend who owns a restaurant be just bought.
He has a very long LED strip running along all the walls and columns. The strip is attached facing down 2in above the floor, using a wall panel that ends in a metal rail that finishes the panel underneath
It's stuck using, I guess, the 2 sided tape that comes with the strip
The issue is that like 1/2 of the full length, including 1/2 one wall, another entire wall, and one column, flickers after 4 or 5 minutes ON. Particularly it flashes staying OFF most of the time and flashing ON for 1 tenth...

                                            Hello,

this is a very strange Problem:

Notebook hang instantly on Boot. BIOS is accesable.
Windows: instant after showing "loading circle", even Windows Boot Stick hang instant (even without installed SSD/NVME )
Linux: instantly (if Linux Boot in leagacy Mode with log messages: Machine Check exception after 0.25 sec)

                                            i have tried:
                                            - only one RAM Stick, another working RAM, both RAM channel
                                            - BIOS Flash to newest Version F.50, BIOS Reset
                                            - Memtest86 hang instant at Test 2
                                            - HP UEFI Diagnostic wont find...

                                            Dear all,
I forgot my BIOS password of my Surface Pro 3, I searched for solutions for a long time and knew that by using FPT to dump my bios to bin file and using decryptor, I can get my BIOS password.
Now I have a problem that I am unable to dump my BIOS into bin file.

My Surface Pro 3 currently runs on Ubuntu 22.04, with Secure Boot enabled and Boot From SSD Only.

I searched for FPT but there is no Linux version and none of them work.
I hereby request a copy of Intel Flash Programming Tool for Linux x64.
I would really appreciate it if anyone...

What OS are you running these days? I am down to 3 Windows workstations and one Windows Server on my LAN, everything that doesn't have a windows-specific need has been moved to Linux. Printing abilities with my large document centers are Linux's kryptonite; the reason for 2 of the Windows machines. The third machine still has Win7 on it, and isn't connected to the outside world. It has tons of software on it I use for diagnostics and updating various hardwares. My main rig is still Win10 Enterprise, so I had to vote Win10 in the poll...but I have overwhelmingly more linux machines than windows...
