    Re: CF-25 toughbook CPU question

Panasonic might have a manual giving a complete procedure for how to get everything installed. I know that was the case with Compaq when I was dealing with similar issues.

It's nice to see that (at least the installer) Windows 2000 will use the whole drive however like mentioned above, this toughbook is a little underpowered for Win2k.
I'll try installing NT and see what happens.
I had this same problem installing NT workstation on a Virtual Machine. You have to make one partition like 2gb in size, install it on that, then format the rest of the hard drive.

for this same reasons, I don't own Panasonic TVs except for dvd and anything that I don't care to replace. But to depend it on for over 120 bucks item like TV, etc. no way.

What is important, how good service you can get for a said expesnive item.

          Cheers, Wizard

            Re: CF-25 toughbook CPU question

i had lots of problems when i tried to install NT4 onto an old laptop (Celeron 366).
partition crap like you described above..

i finally managed to install it...

i made a 2GB FAT partition, installed NT4 onto it, and converted it to NTFS from within that NT4..

all other methods didn't really work..

            oh and BTW...:

            NT4 SP6a

Install the translator driver before any OS or you won't access the disk above 8 GB. If you need it, I can zip the disk and post it tomorrow.

One bad side of NT4 is you can't slipstream the Service pack as in Windows 2000 upwards: there are some hacks about replacing some files with the SP ones, but the discover of replaceable files is a long trial and error process with a lot of BSOD during the install or (worse) immediately after that and works only on NT Terminal Server. Best thing is getting a NT 4.0 with SP6 cd image and install from that.
I'd keep a 2-3 GB partiton for 98: it can be handy for running recent programs which don't run at all on NT (mainly multimedia ones, since NT is limited to DirectX 3).

                  Hi, Zandrax.
About the NT4 SP6 ISO... Have you ever come across a real one? All those I've seen are hacked install cds not made by microsoft.
                  Thanks in advance.

                    Re: CF-25 toughbook CPU question

there are no NT4 CDs with a servicepack higher than 1.
they are all either without a SP at all, or with SP1.

everything else is a "hacked" version..

                    oh.. and zandrax...
DirectX 5 is the last one

                    http://home.arcor.de/danclenator/nt4/progs/dx5nt.zip

its not official, and this won't boost the count of working games that much, but hey.. better than DX3 lol

                    some other stuff:

                    Flashplayer 9
                    http://home.arcor.de/danclethefirst/...ashplayer9.zip

Windows Media Player 7.1 (needs SP6a and IE6 installed!)
                    http://home.arcor.de/danclenator/nt4/progs/WMP71nt4.exe

the WMP is in german. can't find the english version ATM (link is dead)

                        Re: CF-25 toughbook CPU question

I don't actually recommend this, but in case you want to do it:

If you want the Win98 interface on NT4, you can install the "active desktop update" which is offered when you install IE4. I'm not sure where to get it online nowadays but I can post a copy if needed. It might actually be on your SP4 disc.

You can also install it from IE5 and IE6, but not as easily. You can just upgrade to IE6 afterwards and active desktop will stay.

This gives you all the conveniences that started with Win98, such as being able to drag and drop on the start menu, the quick launch thing, etc. Basically it replaces the Win95 shell with internet explorer doing everything instead.

However, unless you really hate the old shell then I don't recommend doing this. It puts a major hit on performance.
The Win98 style interface is much slower and consumes more RAM, undermining much of the reason for installing NT4 in the first place. Still, it probably won't consume as much memory as if you installed win2k, and it's much more stable than 98.

                          Re: CF-25 toughbook CPU question

@ jpdoe, Scenic: I wrongly recalled that my NT 4 cd was shipped with SP6, I had to check it to be sure it isn't;anyway it would have negated my previous speech about hacked slipstreams Senile dementia 60 years in advance or simple lack of sleep?

@ Scenic: damn hackers, they discovered how to put DX5 for NT! Now I can play Age of Empires 1, Carmageddon, Driver, MDK and others
WMP 7 can run on NT just by modifying the installer and skipping the ASPI requirement: never tested for cd audio playback, old Winamp versions (such as 2.95) are IMHO better. MDGX hosts the english version.

@ gdement: I know IE integration is memory hungry and quite slow, but you can always install 98 with 98Lite (free edition has Chubby install which doesn't install IE) and later add IE6 plus other unofficial Service packs and programs you like. My retropc is a Pentium 100 with 32 MB of ram and my customized 98: only Opera is slow because it swaps a lot after 3 tabs, other programs work fine so the final result isn't disappointing.

                            Oh god.
Usually when you try to run a graphic program (Like Half-Life) at something smaller or larger than the physical size of the panel, the LCD controller makes it so that the image still runs fullscreen.
Well I fired up Half-Life at 640 x 480 (800 x 600 with only ~1Mb VRAM? Expect FPS rape) and instead of it doing exactly that it just gave me a black screen with the game running at 640 x 480 (actual size) in the upper left corner. Needless to say it was hell to play the game then as everything was so damn small.

I also seem to have an issue with Doom. The colors are all wrong but it does not seem to happen with other DOS games or apps.

                              some projects never work out...

old laptops are buggy like that

maybe the hardware is going out- it might not be software

search ebay for newer stuff- put a bit in and see what you can find (see my signature)

ik tough books are supposed to be really nice, but a buissness laptop will do you fine as long as you take care of it (dont smash it on the ground when you get mad, etc.)

remeber you still have a hd to use, and the power cord might work with other stuff

                              somtimes you gotta move on

i do know micron transport trek 2 was good

I had one that until an idiot killed the screen, ran win 2000 no prob- they take up to 256mb ram and come with upgradeable PII 366 processors (dixon core, the fastest PII)

Yeah, it's usually Fn + T but that does not work here. It's actually quite strange but I'll blame the BIOS anyways.

I am trying to repair an ancient Dell 2209WA Monitor which suddenly shut off with a pop sound. On investigation found that one of the fusible resistors had blown. Further investigation identified multiple components as faulty because of which the fusible resistor blew. Please refer the attached circuit diagram showing the components that were found to be damaged.

Need help to replace burned resistor in 350w atx psu

                                      Hi to all forum members,

Got this faulty 350 watt atx psu dirt cheap from a local online seller as i am keen to use it as a learning tool to repair faulty power supply.
The faulty part is quite obvious from the burn area near the 16pin KA7500 BD pwm. The fuse is still intact with good continuity.

Upon power on ac, there is 5vdc standby power on cathode of diode D14 and about 10vdc on cathode of diode D13.(This should be the aux power to generate the 12v and 5v rail.)
Initially i replace the two burned resistors near my marked red arrow to 200 ohm resistor...

Can a resistor lose resistance after hot air?

I am curious if a 0402 resistor could go from 43 ohm to 0. In electronics class and my experience a resistor can degrade and gain resistance all the way up to not being able to conduct at all. I have never heard of a resistor decreasing in resistance and becoming 0 ohm or a dead short… that's not the direction they fail… or so I thought.

I was attempting to remove a wson8 chip on an iMac motherboard and it required a lot of heat, on one side of the chip were 3 0402 resistors that were very close. I popped the chip out unintentionally out of the tweezers and sent those resistors...

What resistor ohm will work better to repair this waterpik?
                                      by artvandalai
The resistor on this waterpik blew. I changed it with the a similar spec 47ohm 2 watt yageo resistor but it still keeps blowing the resistor. Checking with the multimeter the motor, capacitor, diodes, and thermal fuse all checked normal. Will a higher ohm resistor work better? What ohm resistor will work better to repair this waterpik? This video is showing the repair with a 56 ohm resistor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J7_rV7ui1Y

Is it okay to replace 1/2 watt resistor with 1 watt resistor in AC/DC adapter?
                                      by chth96
I have purchased an 100-240v AC/5v 2a DC adaptor from aliexpress, and a month ago It smelled burning when I plugin it powerstrip.
Since then, This AC/DC adaptor have been out of order.
But A few days ago,I replace 0.5 watt resistor with 1 watt resistor(1ohm) in this adapter.
After replacing resistor,It succeed to recharge all of android phone. And When I measure voltage on the two pins of USB port,It shows 5.5v
Is it okay to replace 1/2 watt resistor with 1 watt resistor in AC/DC adapter?
And Is there any possibility that it will suddenly explode as well as to be out...
