If I didn't know about the MS boot img file I wouldn't have noticed it.
    Nlite didn't mention it.

bgavin, i don't quite understand you.
boot image file is (for example) something you could employ to bootable cd back in the win98 days by using the bootable floppy(you made while in win) and with nero as burning program(make bootable cd...blah, blah..).

i don't think nlite would be making images without it, because such images wouldn't be bootable, so i don't see why are you mentioning that?

any xp installer cd has those files that nlite can use to make cd bootable.
no need to look for it on the web etc.

i've recently made ubcd ( http://www.ubcd4win.com/ ) which is a live-cd(windows), and i didn't worry about boot image file and it worked without problems.

the only time you need to worry about it is when you're using some non-automated tool which requires you to add that file manually(like the mentioned boot-floppy/nero approach in the past...that reminds me...good lord how usefull today is that win98 image i've put on the bootable cd back in the day...huh...as usable as win98 ever was...).
if ultraiso is such prog, it's automatically worse for this purpose than nlite...
which wouldn't be surprising given that nlite is the tool specifically made to make such bootable images, and ultraiso is made to be image management tool, and burning tool etc.

nLite is a clever hack. It is one that I don't fit well with. YMMV.

UltraISO is a much more intuitive program. It is also designed to specifically create bootable CDs.

I'm not into hacks. I need something as close to mainstream as possible. My experience is using the "Microsoft Corportion.img" image file, which is present on the factory CD.

I require numerous $OEM setup scripts for registry and software installs plus the Driverpacks slipstreamed in my boot CDs. They have to install on all main stream hardware without fiddling.

I have unattended install CDs that boot and work correctly. I'm sure there are other ways of doing it, but I have settled on what is reliable and repeatable for my needs.

you're stubborn: both programs will write exactly the same thing to boot sector, only ultraiso requirs one to add it manually.
          i prefer automation.

          hack?
registry scripts, software installs and driver packs slipstreaming is as hackerish as it gets...no matter what you use to do it.

i'm not saying you shoudl change your ways, but suggesting more complex way while simpler will probably work.....

and i very much doubt ultraiso is created specifically to make bootable cds: its name is ultraiso, and iso is one standard for image files, and that's what it was ment to do...handle image files.
creating bootable stuff is just added bonus.

btw. i don't use ultraiso OR nlite, i already have a xp installer that i got from the web(with bundled apps and drivers) that installas on anything i tried....
i'm just saying you're offering the more complex route...and i think that's the wrong way.

also i fail to see why you keep repeating the "Microsoft Corportion.img" as some sort of mantra?
it's just something to start booting the cd, and won't really help at all if you lack the storage drivers ie if you didn't bundle them, as this thread proves....
          it's not a magic bullet.

I use the Microsoft image file because it launches NTLDR and the setup program. I'm in the mainstream business market, and have learned to do what works without excess twiddling.

Stubborn? Ok, how about you posting a detailed process. Soup to nuts. Show us all how it's done, rather than downloading somebody else's work. I am certainly willing to learn from somebody smarter than I am. If you tutor the OP on how to make his CD, step by step, we will all learn from you.

The board in question requires a unique combination of Intel ICH + ITE drivers. They are required both in Text and GUI setups. 0x7B BSOD results when the GUI is started and the drivers are absent. In your tutorial, please be sure to slip stream the text and gui drivers onto the CD for the OP. F6 driver installation is not an option.

he already made the cd, by using nlite; what does that tell you, is it hard?
there are guides(on nlite site), there are even youtube videos, i think.
i had no trouble in making live-cd(you know what that is, i presume) just by reading instructions on ubcd4win web site.
so i don't have to make guides, guides already exist.

              >The board in question requires a unique combination of Intel ICH + ITE drivers.

yes, and travistee made the cd and it worked.

              did you miss this post

it's right above your post where you said you had troubles with nlite.
in itself it proves he doesn't need ultraiso OR ms boot file.

otoh, i would like to hear your process of adding(for example) irfanview as a program to be installed upon win instalation, doing it with ultraiso...

why am i not doing this myself?
because i have huuge list of programs(that i use..so i would be making it only for myself) and it would take too much time to gather it all etc.
also, i would have to wonder why, because it may as well happen that by the time i need another install hardware i have at that time won't be supporting xp at all.
this mobo i got last year seems to be one of the last with 2k drivers, and soon same will start happening with xp....

and, like i said, i have the xp installer from the web which bundles many programs, drivers etc. bootable dvd.
worked anywhere i tried it, and i tried it on number of places.
for you it probably is not a solution, because it's pirated version of win xp.

i do stuff when i need it: i needed to put acronis true image 11 on the live-cd and did that succesfuly, although i can do same thing with driveimage xml, and i'll probably be using that, because it's helluva faster than acronis.

overall, process of making and restoring hdd images turned out to be quite an adventure because acronis 9(i had) didn't support my hardware(it surely is better to load win from live-cd than to rely on drivers bundled on acronis boot cd, because when run from win acroni suses win resources, and win doesn't have issues with not recognizing primary jmicron controller etc....) and also because restoring 2 partitions to one drive is not straight forward, but i solved all isssues and now have a system by which i can do hdd image every day, if i want.
              and do it fast.

without ubcd4win it wouldn't really be possible.
(offcourse, doesn't have to be ubcd4win...ubcd is built on bartpe, so that can be used too...)
