I have a sony vaio vgn fs550
It has a centrino processor.
512K memory.
It got real slow after installing norton internet security 2007.
Any ideas on why ?
Any recommendations on which anti virus I could use that would use less
resources.
I was using CA. It wasn't so slow.

corsair 1333 triple channel 3gb
XP pro
It runs just fine.
Lots of apps use all 8 cores.
Real fast for video editing or dvd ripping.
I don't like win7. Tried it with a q9300.
You can resize partition in vista or win7
For XP I use easus partition free software. -
Backup UPS capacity and PSU capacity?
I have a seasonic 550HT.
I wanted to use a backup UPS that would work with it.
I had a APC Back UPS ES 500, but that seemed to have too low a wattage capacity for my old Antec 430, so I thought it would not work with the 550HT. It works with the 430 but if I have the monitor plugged into the battery backup side it sometimes overloads.
So I got an APC RS1500VA LCD.
The LCD shows how much wattage it is actually using.
The Antec 430 was getting to over 200 watts but the 550HT rarely goes over 150 watts and idles at 105 with the system on.

I think the problem was caused by conflicts with the audio drivers.
I have a Palit video card that has HDMI, and sound on the mobo.
The ATI installation for the video card installs its realtek audio drivers which was ok when I used the HDMI.
When I wanted to change to analog sound and not use the HDMI I installed the soundmax drivers for the mobo.
That caused the conflict that apparently caused the problem.
I don't know why it started up properly sometimes.

Actually it is a fresh xp install.
It was a repair install over the original which came from the laptop.
I have the NOS off now. Its all default bios now, except for the boot sequence.
When I press F8 to try to get into safe mode, I get choices of which disk to boot from but it doesn't go into safe mode.
What are these zombie explorers?
Should Av get rid of those.
So far my AV/AM cant find anything.
I think this started after I tried to set the audio to analog.

When I boot up the system I get the choices of users, then it doesn't get past the background image. Nothing else happens. No icons , no start butten, etc.
However it doesn't happen everytime.
It was working ok for a few weeks.
System has XP Home on a disk that was cloned from a Sony Vaio laptop.
Most of the sony apps were uninstalled.
A new XP key was used.
The laptop had SP2, SP3 was installed on this one

I used seagates disk wizard. Its a version of Acronis.
Free if you attach any maxtor or seagate drive to it.
Works fine.
Repair install worked fine.
Now my desktop system thinks its a sony vaio laptop.
Just had to uninstall the sony stuff that only runs on sony.Leave a comment:

Seagate has something called Disk Wizard which is a limited version of Acronis.
Its free.
It will work if you have at least one Seagate or Maxtor drive.

I want to do a new install of XP home (different product key, same XP) on another computer.
I want to have a backup of the laptop then restore it on the other computer.

This is why I think I need one.
I had an ASUS mobo that I upgraded.
I had a P5P800SE and now I have a P6T with an I7.
I'm doing a repair install of XP using the disk I had with the original mobo.
There are some ASUS utilities on there that will not completely uninstall.
If I want to install the new ASUS utilities they will have conflicts with things that the old utilities left behind when uninstalled ( ASUS says).
So, I need to cleanup the leftovers that are going to mess up the new ASUS utilit...Leave a comment:

Now that I solved my other problem with the 1066 in dual channel...
Is 1066 worth the extra expense.
I paid $74 for 2GB of 1066.
I could get 4gb 800 for $38

Problem solved:
I had some extra standoffs in the case.
I removed them and it works fine now.
Two 1066 modules in the dual channel slots.

The yellow slots are A
The green slots are B.
Dual channel has a few options, but for two modules they go in the two yellow slots.
I'm using the D820
Kingston 1066
Palit hd2600xt video card
So this is what happened.
I tested it outside the case and it worked with two modules in the yellow slots !!!!!!!!
So now, what is the problem?
I'm getting a new case for a different system that I'm building in a few days.

The problem I'm having is trying to see why it works for them and not for me.
They say to test it outside the case, they way they did.

The video used a Q9300 to see if it was any different than the D820.
The PSU is retail.
The video tested the memory in each slot seperately because says it is supposed to post that way. That would not be how it is to be used. If it cant post with the memory in each slot then there is a problem
The point here is that ASUS says they tested it and it worked for them.
So, I am looking for ideas as to why it is not working for me.
