    RAM issues.

My friend has a computer that I am trying to diagnose at the moment. I had a look at it the other day and the PC had a virus. Now that issue is solved. Now the RAM amount isn't being read properly. He has 1x 1GB DDRII stick made by Apacer.

The motherboard is an Asus P5-VD2-X bundled with a 3.4 Intel P4 CPU and an Asus 8500GT graphics card. I checked out the PSU the other day and I've confirmed that it is a high quality iExtreme series PSU made by Cooler Master.

Only trouble is that the PC only reports the amount of RAM being 128MB. He reseated the RAM and it now registers 256MB. I am having trouble trying to understand how a 1GB stick has become 256MB?.
The other day when I was alerted about the computer. It would only emit one long beep and two short beeps. When I popped over to have a look at it, the PC worked perfectly, but now the memory amount is reported wrongly.

I presume that there is a problem with the RAM and it needs to be replaced?

    Thanks.

    Re: RAM issues.

Try another DDR2 RAM module and see if the problem still occurs.

      Re: RAM issues.

Make sure ram are in memory qvl: it's not necessary but a tested module which shares its chips with your friend's Apacers is a 90% claim of compatibility.
Clean ram slots: they may be dirty or oxided. Clean ram contacts as well with a spray deoxidiser or a vinyl rubber.
If it still doesn't work, then try another module as Newbie2 suggests.

I told my friend to reseat his RAM stick and showed him this page with Zandrax's post on cleaning the RAM stick and guess what? The PC now registers 1GB of RAM.

        Problem solved!!!!.

        Thanks.

PS4 controller left stick potentiometer replacement issue
            by ezenia
            Hello,

Not sure if this is the correct section, but I have a PS4 controller that I am trying to fix. It developed stick drift on the left stick and the usual simpler methods did not fix the problem.

So I went on eBay and ordered some replacement potentiometers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174967976757 is where I got them from.

I took the green potentiometers off the replacement sticks and soldered them onto the PCB. Assembled the controller and ran some tests. The drifting was somewhat fixed (not fully in center, but way better than before). However,...

Hi, trying to troubleshoot some problems with this laptop I just finished repairing which had power issues (Burnt Buck converter - SY8883DFC shorted to ground).

After repairing the above issue, I realized the following remaining problem,
Sound only comes from bottom speakers, top palmrest speakers don't work. Neither does the headphone jack (static/buzzing).
The computer recognizes headphones are connected and displays a popup in windows
Sometimes, the computer will boot up and the sound will be working fine. However, if I run intensive programs and the computer...

PS5 Dualsense controller stick drift a mainboard issue?
            by dbuergi
            Hi all,

I got a controller where the left stick was moving left all the time (-1.00 at calibration tool). Even after changing to hall effect sticks it stayed the same and reset and all others things didn't help.
I removed the stick again and even without it calibration tool shows a movement to the left. Anybody knows where the fault can come from? Maybe any bridges or damaged SMD components?

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH - Ideapad 3 well known solder joint issues
            by Nagyesz
I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH, which has started exhibiting the well-known issues of the Lenovo IdeaPad 3.

All stress tests run perfectly, and there are no performance issues. However, the solder joints are almost certainly starting to fail. If the top two screws on the back are not screwed in, moving the screen results in a BSOD or, in some cases, a slight artifact and freeze. This is a 2023 notebook..

How can I extend its lifespan? Could reflow help?

It has ryzen 5 5500h, rtx 2050, no soldered ram.

            Example of the artifacts:
