How to clean desktops, or wash it.

A friend's 6 year old HP desktop's PSU finally gave up, so I was the one to rescue him. First I had to make sure it was the PSU which died nothing else so I connected the tower with my corsair vs350 and it booted. Post that my itch to clean it took off..

    Some "before" pics

    On arrival:

    Testing:

    Dismantling:

    Cleaning:

    Foxconn mainboard:

Old CMOS battery was dead so got new:

New PSU (I ordered VS350, they probably had no stock so shipped VS450 for the price of 350!)

    Assembled:

    Front audio/USB ports tested fine.

    All sleeved cables:

I was puzzled to find out my old ddr2 ram stick didn't fit on these ddr2 dimm slots :o

It was fun. Next time I will remove all heatsinks/jumpers possible from the motherboard pre-washing.

PS: Yes, it booted the first time, zero issues. I kept it under the sun for 5/6 hours before powering it up.

Might have something to do with the board using DDR3 memory

Ohk.. this one one of those rare boards that supports next gen memory on old gen chipset. Wow. Thanks.
PS: I could not find the board in foxconn.com, didnt bother checking HP
Hey, does this mean it won't support single stick of 4 GB DDR3?

      Memory upgrade information

      Supports DDR3 DIMMs only
      Dual channel memory architecture
      Two DDR3 DIMM (240-pin) sockets
      DIMM types:
      PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)
      PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066)
      PC3-6400 (DDR3-800)
      Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
      Supports 2 GB DDR3 DIMMs
Supports up to 4 GB on 64-bit PCs
Maximum memory only if using 2GB DDR3 DIMM modules

Might work with 8GB total with 2x4GB sticks, depends on BIOS, only way to know is to try it

Just did. Working. Don't know if it is worth spending more on this old system. It is used for browsing only.

If you want really weird/rare the Gigabyte EP45C-UD3R (P45 Chipset) in my desktop takes both DDR2 and DDR3 memory (though you can't mix them together it is one or the other).

Yeap, I give them a bath as well. But in the drying process i use air conditioner instead of heat source. Just leave it on the floor, after 1 day or 2, it dried completely.

                      Sun bathing is best.

I can't find the BIOS of this board man. Installed ATI R7 240, doesn't work.

You need to search the HP site with the actual model number of the machine, that way you will find the BIOS.

It is this one : HP Pavilion p6310in. Site has everything that I don't need except BIOS.

EDIT: Well I had to change graphics to PCIx in BIOS and it worked! No BIOS update needed.

I would have washed it in isopropyl, not soap
