    Outlook 2002 and Gmail issue

Okay, right now I am having a heck of a time configuring MS outlook 2002 to work with my gmail account via POP3.
It will receive mail fine but I just can't send mail.
It's really ticking me off and I would prefer to try and fix the issue with outlook rather than just switch to something like thunderbird.
The same goes for IMAP. It will receive mail fine but it won't send anything.
Is this just a bug with Outlook?

EDIT: when I click the "test account settings" button in the account manager, everything passes except sending the test letter and it says "please verify the m-mail address field" but my email has been correctly entered.

Many ISP's require you to use their SMTP server for sending mail; this is to reduce SPAM...

Check and see if gmail has an alternate SMTP port, many ISP's block SMTP traffic on port 25.

        Microsoft proprietary software!

I use the Linux version of Thunderbird. Here are the settings for my Gmail account.

Put your email account in the "User Name" section. I replaced mine with x's, for obvious reasons.

          Well it's not the settings.
I have thunderbird setup with the EXACT same settings and it can receive and send mail. They should be like this.
I first tried port 25 but it was slow and while port 465 did work, it would still fail in sending the test email.

Okay, I did a little more testing and this is what I get:

            POP3 mail connection

            Settings used :http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...y?answer=70881
Note: Both outgoing ports were tested

Receive result: I can receive mail.
            Send result:
            Code:
Task 'pop.gmail.com - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
            IMAP mail connection

            Settings used: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...y?answer=77661
Note: these settings and windows are identical to that of outlook 2002.

Receive result: I can receive mail.
            Send result:
            Code:
Task 'imap.gmail.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
            EDIT:
After scratching my head over this, I discovered that gmail knows about this issue and they told me to download an update for office XP (and thus outlook).
I'm downloading it now and I'll get back as soon as it's loaded.

This is a little notice to anyone who has just installed office XP or outlook 2002.

If you want to work with gmail, you need the latest service pack.
I installed it and my problem cleared up.

Glad you fixed this issue, but why do you use Outlook instead of another client? After all, Outlook strong point is integration with MS Exchange: if you don't use Exchange, then there are better alternatives (Eudora - now free; Thunderbird; The Bat; many others).

                  Grr...
This is REALLY getting on my nerves.
For some strange reason, every time I try to make a new message, reply to a message or edit a message it will switch my text color to blue.

Check Option or Preferences menu: there should be some text formatting options.

Re: Outlook 2002 and Gmail issue

OE has these options, so it's really strange big Outlook doesn't.
Check Options -> Mail format: there should be a formatting item (or more of them). Last option, IMHO the best one: compose mail as text only. No more formatting issues, no more fancy blinking characters, images only as attachments: simply text.

What the bloody $@#% is going on now?
For some reason, I'm getting mail delivered to my gmail account but neither outlook (on windows) OR thunderbird (on Linux) is detecting the new mail in my inbox. All my settings are correct and they were working fine a week ago. What the hell?

Cut to the chase and do it with DOS. Open a CMD window:

                            telnet mailservername.gmail.com 110
                            user myusername@gmail.com
                            pass myuserpassword

                            list

If you have mail here, and can LIST it, you have a settings problem.
The above is straight forward POP3 access to Gmail.

If you are doing Web mail, you have to have Outlook 2003 or newer.

I'm still getting gmail on my Linux/Thunderbird setup. This means that they didn't change anything. I think that you have to setup the gmail account so that it can be accessed by a email application.

I have been using thunderbird with Gmail since October 07 and I have never had this problem. Either outlook is screwing around with my gmail (which it should not) or google has recently changed something and it's causing problems on my end. I'll cycle my gmail settings and see what happens.

                                  Okay.
Well cycling my POP settings forced both thunderbird and outlook to re-download all my gmail messages (about 590 messages) but now outlook is giving me this whenever it tries to look for new mail:
                                  Code:
Task 'pop.gmail.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
I'm still waiting for thunderbird to download all my messages but I have a feeling that it too will error out the next time I try to check for new mail.

Okay, I honestly don't get it anymore.
The last time I checked, both Thunderbird AND Outlook were properly configured and BOTH were properly sending and receiving mail.
Then yesterday, completely out of nowhere Gmail suddenly decides that it will not notify both Thunderbird OR Outlook of any new mail and then after I cycle the POP settings (switch POP3 off and then back on) Outlook can't even connect to Gmail and Thunderbird STILL can't find any new mail!

Pentium, time changes, and microsoft is fiddling with the processes that outlook is using even you had used same outtrash thing.

Go with other good email programs as they have suggested. Preferably standalone to prevent spread of viruses, trojans etc. I'd recommend pegasus mail, I use mine for years, and very stable. Emails is just to communicate and transfer stuff but not for running things out of THAT email and very flexible that you can choose to view it normally or "horrors" pipe it thru to a web browser.
