Re: Data recovery

Linux Pro Magazine recently had an issue devoted to hard drive forensics (Aug 2008). One of the articles was "Investigating Windows systems with Linux" Here is a link to a PDF version of that article:

Another article in the same issue dealt with recovering deleted files. Some of the tools used may be of...

First, I see that my first link is bad, so here is the corrected link:

I don't actually have a DVD with copy protection, so I can't confirm if it works. I have copied Linux installation DVDs this way. Since it is making an image file of the entire disk, it should work (in theory).Re: DVDs on HDDs<br /> <br /> Firs...py protection,

    Re: DVDs on HDDs

I thought that the idea for the iso image was to copy the disk, not rip it.

I admit to not playing a lot of commercial DVDs in Linux. But if you are just playing the DVD or iso, why would you need to remove the copy protection? There are two methods to do this, anyway.

FYI: to create an iso image file of a disk in Linux, use this command.
dd if=/dev/dvd of=DvdName.iso
That's it! No program to purchase and install, and no Micro$oft!

    Maybe.
    mode as an option
It depends on the chipset in the card, and the driver used. I only use Linux, and some of the wireless chips have AP mode as an option. Take a look at this site for a list of drivers that support AP mode. This is only a list of open source drivers.

Here's a site with many LIRC (Linux Infra-red Remote Control) config files.

    That's right the frontend/backend is like a client/server.

The MythTV backend contains the database. It also would contain the capture card(s), or in the HD Homerun case, the setup of the card. So, then this is where all of the recorded programs are stored. Any post processing like marking for commercial skip, or transcoding, are also done on the backend.

The frontend is mainly the "GUI" for MythTV. It is used to watch "live" TV or the recordings. This is where you...

For an easy MythTV system, I recommend using the Mythbuntu distro. It is Ubuntu with MythTV pre-installed, and almost pre-configured. The only thing that I disliked about it was the use of the XFCE desktop environment. That can be easily changed by installing the Gnome or KDE desktop from the Ubuntu repositories.

Mythbuntu is completely compatable with Ubuntu, and uses the same repositories. In fact you can also install the Mythbuntu packages on a regular Ubuntu install.

If you want to share files over a network, in a multi-OS environment, then maybe you need to set up a NFS share.

  • Re: Recommend SVHS Capture Card

I don't disagree with your position that more expensive hardware won't necessarily mean better pictures. She may not have made proper adjusments in the hardware that didn't work for her.

My OPINION is that DVD's are not real high quality video, by todays standards. The mpeg-4 gives a much better picture with a smaller file size. But it can't be played in a standard DVD player.

Yes, for what bgavin wants, spending a lot of money would be foolish. He hasn't even mentioned how he will make the DVDs. There are a lot of different...

I left sudenly because I am a moderator at another forum, and duty called. I was appointed a mod because of my polite dealings with the posters in that forum.

  • Re: Crypto DVBT 110 SA

I think that the DVB-T stream is a mp4 compressed video (if I recall my "discussion" with i4004 correctly). I guess that the converter then has a chip to convert it to PAL.

Lots of people here in the USA would love a system like that. Our mpeg-2 system gives us awesome pictures, but the stream is quite large.

  • Re: Recommend SVHS Capture Card

Whether you intend to or not, you come across as a rude know-it-all. If you have formed an opinion of something, then everyone else who differs is wrong.

Your treatment of KeriJane was unacceptable! She was sharing her actual experience with us. Just because your experience is different, that doesn't mean she is wrong. You seem to have scared her away. I hope she returns, as a differing point of view is always welcome (to most).

I actually was considering making a post similar to bgavin's, but blew it off. I really didn't...

Is DVBT terrestrial broadcast (hence, the "T") or satellite? Can you tune in any stations?
