Go with other good email programs as they have suggested. Preferably standalone to prevent spread of viruses, trojans etc. I'd recommend pegasus mail, I use mine for years, and very stable. Emails is just to communicate and transfer stuff but not for running things out of THAT email and very flexible that you can choose to view it normally or "horrors" pipe it thru to a web browser.

I'm sorry to raise my voice but OUTLOOK IS NOT THE GADDAMNED PROBLEM!
If it's not even working on thunderbird, which is not even running on windows, IT'S NOT FUCKING OUTLOOK!
All I want is to get my goddamned mail and for some reason NO mail program wants to communicate properly with Gmail and if this keeps up I'm switching back to hotmail and I'm telling google to go screw themselves.

^^As you can see I am going insane. Someone please save me before I stab myself with a soldering iron.

Before I blow another fuse I'm going to reset everything and start from scratch.
Either google is messing with me or I changed something and I forgot about it.

        Pentium, you have two tests:
        a) use Gmail webmail through your browser: does it function? Are new messages correctly detected?
        b) The issue seems to be Outlook's: Thunderbird is at least capable of connect to gmail server, so you can exclude network issues (say, wrong MTU or too short Time To Live). If you can't still connect, then install a pop3 proxy on your computer and see what happens: I use FreePops, which has a Gmail plugin. Follow instrucions, load the proxy and run your mail client.

You mean open firefox and go to my gmail account and check the inbox there?
Yes, I can see all my mail, even the stuff that's not going to Outlook or Thunderbird.

Re: Outlook 2002 and Gmail issue

I had two cctalk newsletters arrive in my gmail inbox this morning.
Thunderbird saw them and told me I had new mail while Outlook said I had no new mail.

You have one weird issue there! Having said this, I think I know why you saw some mail in Thunderbird and not in Outlook. One question. Does the mail you download through Thunderbird or Outlook delete that email from the mail server or at least mark off that the mail has been read in Gmail? This is what usually happens with POP3 servers. If this is the case, you downloaded the email in Thunderbird. Then you go to Outlook and it did not find the email because it has been deleted in GMail or it has been marked as being read (and hence is not new email).

I am not sure how GMail works exactly however this is what happens with commercial mail servers.

Re: Outlook 2002 and Gmail issue

Outlook and thunderbird just look for any mail marked as unread in my gmail inbox and download it to my pc without changing the mail in my Gmail inbox.

If I'm getting better results with Thunderbird then I think I'll have to live with just using my linux box for mail and my PC for everything else or at least it will stay that way until I can afford to upgrade and completely reload my pc.

Re: Outlook 2002 and Gmail issue

I think that the issue is exactly what shadow said. It has been my experience that new mail can only be accessed once. If I have Thunderbird on different computers, it will not find any new messages if they have all already been read.

Also, I have T-bird set to delete messages that I have deleted on my PC. I recently check my gmail account and found that It is not doing this.

One solution is to download the mail to a local PC, to act as a mail server. Then set up your client apps to fetch the mail from there. Maybe someone from these forums can recommend a program that will do that.

I also see that gmail has an option to use IMAP for mail with multiple clients/PS's. Have you tried this? I tried it with my gmail account, and it seems to only download the headers. When you want to access a mesage, it says it is downloading it. This is suppose to allow it to be accessed by several clients, by leaving the original doc on the server, unchanged.

                    Are you positive?
I closed Thunderbird last night and a bunch of mail came in while I was sleeping (I always get mail Thursday morning).
Even though I had five new messages the next morning, outlook did not see them and since Thunderbird was not running they were not accidentally marked as read.
I'm giving up. If thunderbird works, I'm not going to complain.

No, I am not positive. So I just tried a little experiment. I sent an email to myself and opened it up on another PC. When I then went back to the laptop that I usually use, Thunderbird said that there are no new messages.

This was done with Thunderbird on two different Linux boxes. I don't know if it behaves differently when outlook accesses it.

Well, then this is really going nowhere.
How about I stick with Thunderbird as it so far seems to be the most reliable and forget Outlook.

                        Problem solved.

It's a strange issue: anyway, if Thunderbird or other client works while Outlook doesn't, you should abandon Outlook unless you have a strong need of it.
