Hi,
Earlier in december, my old OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb SSD brutally died, after a bit over four years of use, not too bad for these. My computer was running absolutely beautifully, it rarely ever crashed and ran the same installation of Windows during those four years.
Here's my computer :
- Phenom II X4 965BE (not OC)
- Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 (AMD 890GX+SB850)
- 2x2Gb + 2x4Gb Kingston HyperX Blu 1600Mhz
- MSI GeForce GTX480 (thermal paste has been changed recently, it runs perfectly)
- Creative Audigy 1 (with Live! Drive II front bay)
- OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb (dead now)
- WD Caviar Green 1Tb
- Seagate 320Gb
- Maxtor 200Gb IDE + Pioneer DVDRW IDE
- HiPro 750W (from a Dell, c_hegge reviewed it and its quite good)
- Samsung T220 and Samsung 206bw.
So I've bought a Samsung 850 Pro 128Gb to replace the OCZ, but I'm getting random freezes with it, and I got them from the very beginning, and I just can't figure out what the problem is :
- first installation, forgot to set AHCI in the freshly upgraded BIOS (so it's the last version now), it installed in IDE mode and I got a loss of speed but it was still quite fast.
I couldn't put it back to AHCI, I did all I could (registry mods, drivers installation,...) but it wouldn't boot with AHCI mode activated, as if the drive wasn't bootable. It started freezing with this fresh installation.
- second installation, this time done properly, the speed test is perfect, the updates are downloading and installing properly...but the freezes are back.
- I suspected the old Audigy, as it was installed just below the very hot GTX480, and I was getting audio drivers issues after every update, so I removed it and used the integrated audio chip. It ran fine for a day, but it freezed again the next day, just after the desktop showed up.
- I did a memtest86+ test, it ran for 20 hours, making 8 passes, no error.
It freezes in completely different moment, idling on the desktop, on start up, while browing the web, in game, watching a video, sometimes it won't freeze for a day, sometimes it does three or four times in one afternoon. It happened twice today already. So there's no "pattern" that could lead me to something. When it freezes, the image is static and if sound is playing it makes an horrible noise. There's nothing to do but force restart. Only once it did something different, the image of the main screen became a mess of multicoloured pixels and it reboot by itself.
I'm out of ideas now, all there's left is a "slightly" faulty SSD, or a chipset problem, a power supply issue (it's in excellent condition inside) or some kind of odd software problem.
Have you got any ideas that could help me ?
Thanks
