• Re: Samsung S24D390HL flashing on and off - wrong power supply ?

The plug I repaired is on the led strip in the panel, I had to carefully disassemble the panel to access it. It's the connector on this exact part : https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Samsung-23-6-TV-S24D390HL-SMME236BMM031-LM41-00086E-CY-MH236BGLV2V/123165894546?hash=item1cad426792:g:HCIAAOSw24RbES7N

The behavior seems to be located on the board. When I measure the voltages in various places, it drops whether or not I plug the screen backlight, lcd or controls.
So it's either a power issue...

• Samsung S24D390HL flashing on and off - wrong power supply ?

Hi,

I just got this nice screen to repair, the first symptom was no backlight, but I could see the image with a light on it. After digging, it appeared the backlight connector was broken at the LED board, the solder failed (it doesn't seem to have been previously disassembled and it needs to be to access this connector).
After carefully pulling the back panel of the screen to access the led board, I was able to solder back the connector.

But now there is another issue, the backlight turns on and off a bit irregularly, then there's a hissing sound (coil whine?)...

• Re: Asus GTX980Ti and MSI GTX980 with the same odd problem

The GTX980 is from early 2015, the 980Ti is from early 2016. They are still very good cards.

The 980 will go in Windows with artefacts if I keep heating the card with a heat gun, but it crashes quick and the screen goes black again. I guess I need to change the GPU with a new one.

Still haven't found the exact issue with the 980Ti, but that low memory voltage shouldn't be related to the GPU. I did reflow and reheat, doesn't make a difference.

As for Fermi, my GTX480 has had three reflow...

Ok after some fiddling with both card, I got some results :
- the MSI GTX980 works...when it's warm !
I let the computer run for a while when I was testing the voltage all over the board, with a passive heatsink on top. I turned it off and on again and the card worked fine, no artefacts (didn't go in an OS though).
I let it sit to cool down and it wouldn't work again.
So I heated up the heastink with a heat gun so the GPU would be at normal usage temps, and it booted up fine.
There has to be...

• Asus GTX980Ti and MSI GTX980 with the same odd problem

Hi,

I have those two high end graphics cards : Asus GTX 980Ti Matrix Platinum 6Gb and MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4Gb that have the exact same problem.

The computer starts, doesn't boot, and then beeps, and shortly after the screen turns on but remains black (nothing is displayed but it's getting a signal). Then after a minute it beeps again, and so on. So the graphics cards don't seem completely dead.

I've tried with several motherboard, same results.

I've tried the reflow with flux with no change at all.

The Asus board as convenient...

• Re: M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 off issue - works fine in horizontal position

I'm pretty sure I did not overtighten the cooler, I used to be able to rotate the whole thing a few degrees (the mounting system is a bit odd and allows that). The temperatures were fine as well. I had killed a S775 motherboard by overtightening the cooler, so I didn't want to do this mistake again.
Now that I've reinstalled it, it's a bit tighter and I can't rotate it anymore.

Yes there was a bracket originally, with a metal backing plate. But there's one one the Hyper 212 Evo cooler as well...

Won an Asus Z97-AR motherboard for 50€ on eBay. These sell for 140 to 170€ new : https://www.amazon.com/Asus-Z97-AR-S1150-Z97-ATX/dp/B00KDKUFAM

The ad said it was the motherboard alone with the I/O but I've juste received it and I was pleasantly surprised to find out it came in the box with all of its bundle except the SATA cables. The socket is fine,...

• M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 off issue - works fine in horizontal position

Hi,

For quite a while now, my rig has been unstable on occasions. During the past week, it was nearly unusable since it would freeze for no reason. I couldn't even go in the BIOS for more than ten seconds, as it would freeze as well.
After testing and replacing all components (GPU, RAM, CPU, power supply, no hard drive), I came to the conclusion that the motherboard was faulty.

The thing is, on my test bed, it was very stable, I could overclock the CPUs easily, it ran perfectly. But once inside the case, it would freeze again constantly. So I placed the computer...

• Re: How much do you hate your smartphone?

I have owned only two so far :

Xperia X10i from april 2011 to christmas 2015 :
- it was fine in the beginning, but quickly became very slow, 256Mb of RAM was not enough.
- it died suddenly after a few months so I got a new one on warranty, it went on without major issue until it became nearly impossible to use
- it was a good design, easy to disassemble and maintain. I replaced the shell once after I broke the touch screen, then I got some issues with the top part of the touch screen, easily solved by cleaning...

• Re: Cheap AliExpress Socket 2011 X79 motherboard and bundles

Heatsink and fan is not a problem, I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo on my computer, it's compatible.
All the videos I can find are in russian, so it's hard to understand and Youtube's auto translation is approximate at best. But from what I see it looks okay. Very basic, but it appears to have the bare minimum a motherboard needs.

Some version of the same, or a very similar board, don't even have a heatsink on the VRMs which seems crazy for that kind of CPUs.

• Cheap AliExpress Socket 2011 X79 motherboard and bundles

Hi,

I'm considering upgrading my system, which is mostly used for 3D creation softwares and other multithreaded apps, as well as a bit of games. But I can't spend a lot.

I've found those cheap socket 2011 bundles on AliExpress, for less than $300 delivered : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/brand-new-X79-PC-suite-including-x79-motherboards-2011pins-with-E5-2660-cpu-16-G-server/32756843461.html

No information on who makes the motherboard, or the RAM, but that looks quite interesting for the price. In general, cheap and socket 2011 don't go...

• Re: Repairing a 1979 Pontiac AM-FM 8-track stereo

I've just put it back together and made some tests, and indeed, the FM doesn't work. No sound comes out. AM works fine, though it's completely useless since it's just gibberish and some foreign stations with no music.

I've found the wires that send the signal from the radio board to the amp, to add an auxiliary input. It will be an easy mod.

As for the 8 track, I don't have any, but I turned the switch on and it seems to work properly. The loose and cracked belt didn't hold for long.

• Re: Repairing a 1979 Pontiac AM-FM 8-track stereo

Thanks for the replies. by looking closely at the board, it looks to be on the FM circuit which is the useful one (AM is useless here, if it were on this circuit I wouldn't care too much).
Do you think these components can be repaired ? They look very simple, but the wire is tiny.

I've just bought an AM/FM cassette unit, by the looks of the knobs it would be a Buick version of the same period, but it should be very similar internally. Maybe the IF transformers are the same on the radio board and I could either...

I'm restoring a '74 Firebird, I want my interior to look all factory original except it won't be...at all :p It's a mix a parts from all the 2nd generation.
Also I've always been curious about 8-tracks, these have never been popular around here so it's an oddity for me and I want to make it work !

• Repairing a 1979 Pontiac AM-FM 8-track stereo

Hi,

I just got a very cheap '79 AM-FM 8-track stereo unit made by Delco, that came from a '79 Firebird, maybe an early 1980 model (the components are dated from mid-'79).

So the first thing I did is to disassemble it to have a look at the condition. First thing I saw is a broken coil/inductor moving around in the unit.
Also the belt is loose and cracked, not surprising.

I did not see anything else that could be an issue, minor surface rust on some steel parts, and light oxydation on aluminium elements.

Just next to the broken...

• Re: 1984 Delco radio not working anymore

Forgot about this thread. The radio has been working just fine since I've finished the restoration nearly two years ago. I don't recall exactly what was wrong, but I think one of the power wire of the harness was damaged and I had to solder it properly. I'd recommend to check for power at the connectors first.
It sounds pretty good with the auxiliary input but newer speakers would be a good idea. The problem is it requires 8 ohms speakers.

• Cheap eBay MP3 players - how to reduce noise ?

Hi,

I just bought a couple of cheap MP3 player on eBay. They do what I'm expecting them to do, playing MP3 files stored on a micro SD card.
The problem is there's quite a bit of background noise. It's not the files, it's the player.
I was thinking about adding a small capacitor or some kind of filter to remove the noise, but I'm not sure what and where.

I've opened one up and unsurprisingly it's pretty bare in there, everything is controlled by this single chip. It's a JL (or JC) AB1532CG2616.1-67. I can't find the datasheet or any documentation about it....

Ok I'll try that if it happens again, because I flashed the BIOS to the latest version and the crashes remained.
So I just to try something, I deactivated the Cool n Quiet feature and so far it hasn't crashed again.

• Re: Unstable Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3

Well after three flawless weeks, the BSODs and freezes are back. BSODs are mostly 0x0000124 which is an hardware error.

Since I've already tried everything, my only options now is to flash the BIOS again or replace the motherboard
