    Logitech X-530.... popping noises.

    Hello Everyone,

I recently purchsed a set of Logitech X-530 series speakers. The speakers are 5.1ch speakers and the sound quality is great.... after all, it did cost me $100AUD which wasn't too bad.
I have one problem with them though. They make a loud popping noise when someone turns on/off the lights which contain ballasts and electronic transformers. When a light is turned on, there is a small pop which is hardly noticeable. But when a light is turned off, I get a loud "pop" through the speakers.... and it's becoming a real pain.
With tube lighting, I can hear a small pop for every flash the light takes to turn on.
I turn the volume of the speaker down to the lowest and the pop emitted is still a loud pop.

I've also plugged the speakers into the 15A line for the Air conditioner to run and there is still a loud pop noise that is transferred through the speakers when a light with an electronic transformer or ballast is turned on/off.

Is there some way that I can get around this problem?? I don't know if anything like this exists but.... I was thinking of something like an EMI filter of some sort that plugs into the 240AC powerpoint and the speaker would be plugged into the back of that to eliminate the noise??

These speakers are still under warranty but I don't really want to have to dismantle the whole speaker setup and return it to the store. I have another set of Logitech speakers, Logitech R-20 series 2.1ch and they don't make a loud popping noise when the lights are turned on or off. Same goes with the Creative SBS370 2.1ch I had before the Logitech X-530 5.1ch, they didn't make a noise when the lights were switched on or off.

But the strange thing is that the Creative SBS370 and Logitech R20 speakers have an external wall wart type of power supply wheras this Logitech just has a power cord that is plugged into the wall.... which probably means that the power supply is inside the speaker/subwoofer.
But I also have another set of 2.1ch "Soloman" brand speakers that are plugged directly into 240VAC like the Logitech X530 and they do not make any popping noise when a light is turned on/off.

I don't know what going on here??

    Thanks.

I went to my local electronics store this afternoon and I asked for a filter to filter out electrical noise inteference and I was told that there was no device that could stop or reduce electrical inteference noise.
I don't know what to do now about the popping noises.
Is there any solution to stop these popping noises??

What a poor salesman at this shop. I would recommend on of those over voltage protector extension leads or adapters.

If you want to mess around by yourself, i would suggest checkout this topic:

I have another problem now. I turned the speakers down all the way and I could hear feint radio signals from a radio station playing through my speakers!!.
I didn't notice the radio signals until today because usually the computer room is quite noisy.
I also got my brother and father to confirm on the radio signals and they are actually there.... so it's just not my imagination playing on me.
I don't know what's going on here or how these radio signals are being picked up by the speakers.
If I turn the speakers up, it disappears which is strage. My PC was not connected to the net at the time and had no applications running at the time.... So I can confirm that it wasn't my PC playing the radio.

Is there something I can do to stop the radio signals being picked up on my speakers as well as the popping noises??

well not sure on the radio station one
guessing probably due to shielding or lack of beads on transistors whatever.

Yeah probably a decent line filtered power board will fix that up switching pops.
(better if they had built in in thought)
Seems they didn't do their job when it came to protection the thing against these types interference
I know it was only $100 but still it something they should have seen too, not you

Most every speaker set I've had pops some when the fluorescent lights are turned on or the compressor in the dehumidifier on the same circuit kicks on or off. This isn't limited to just my logitechs but others as well.

to me its a bit like selling a car without a muffler...its just something you have to to and probably the best place is within the equipment.

it doesn't reflect well on a company when your audio equipment goes "snap crackle and pop"

my logitech's do the same, I haven't got a line filter but since its not very often I don't worry about it.
but in stevos case sounds like he needs to do something about it

should see if I can did up some info on it as we are all effected I suppose to a greater or lesser extent.

keep us posted stevo on how you go.

              Cheers

                My advise to anyone
If you are not skilled lic whatever to work on mains rated equipment or componets etc.
Don't try and build these circuits

Really posting it as informational references on how its done.

                please note;
that caps used would have to meet X and Y specifications
same, whatever the specs might be for an inductor @ mains

not going to comment on this $
but have a look whats in the box here

Anyway mostly same as the stuff in the BC link Gonzo posted above.

here is an IEC power board fitted with filter, this as an example only
some power boards are made like this too, they are the one you would need to seek out.

                  Re: Logitech X-530.... popping noises.

Ok this is an old post I know. But I recently picked up a set of these speakers at a second hand store and was so exited when they actually worked UNTIL the horrid popping started shortly after I plugged them in. After a little research and allot of soul searching (I'm not always comforatable with messing with motherboards, circutboards ect) I figured since they were so cheep and I really had nothing to lose I would try to fix them myself. I found this post
                  http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Speake...t/false#M32004

It actually worked! After a day of running them non-stop they have not popped or buzzed or made any other odd noises since. Mind you it was time consuming and took a great deal of patience but rather than toss out a perfectly good set of speakers why not give it a shot. I personally am very happy right now and highly recommend trying the fix before you go buy new speakers

If you ever have a problem with interference coming in through the power however, essentially, if you've ever seen the input filtering section of a computer power supply, you're wanting to recreate that, more or less.

I had a feeling it was going to be a floating ground line somewhere acting as an aerial, would have suggested a similar fix myself
