Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
Even so, I don't like it. like how 3 obscure updates are required to install sp1. And I don't quite have the COA's... One for home basic (lame),one for home premium (lost), and one for ultimate (on a laptop I SLIC modded to have 7 and is getting rehomed). There also is a 4th on my recent asus laptop but it's worn off (no idea what version, and I don't think the code is legible enough) They aren't frequently used... so I don't see it as a problem.Last edited by ratdude747; 02-27-2014, 01:36 PM.sigpic

2GB in three, 4gb in one (but it also has 7 x64 and Arch x64).

The odd part is, though, that Office 2013 will run on 7 and 8, but not Vista. I'm pretty sure that it's a deliberate move by M$. Not that I'd complain anyway. Office 2013 is just a much uglier and more 2D looking version of office 2010 anyway.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!
No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
Have you tried WU on a fresh install of xp x86 lately?! unless you install an obscure little update that wont show up in WU, it wont update anymore...just spits out errors....but since you dont have the COA's, using vista (legitimately), its a non-issue anyway. 7 and vista function pretty much the same, as 7 was just a polished up vista anyway....
I'd take 7 over vista any day... But XP works. For what I do with those laptops (not much), XP is plenty. Even EOL. It's not like AV doesn't exist anymore... Even if they drop MSE, I'm sure there will be another free AV that will have XP support of some form (they'd be idiots not to).sigpic

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
I do have office 07, but the only program I use from it is Outlook (which didn't use the ribbon interface until v2010). For everything else, I only ever use OpenOffice.
My only other gripe with Vista is the lack of automatic trim support for SSDs. It's a bit of a shame, since putting Vista on an SSD is the only way to really make it fly (and now that both my main desktops have SSDs as the boot drives, There's no going back)Last edited by c_hegge; 02-27-2014, 04:17 PM.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
That said, Office '13 isn't that bad... having seen some of the features (my GF is taking a class in it), there were some things that were well done (like simplifying a lot of formatting options, and making a bibliography system that actually works (and supports oddball citation styles).sigpic

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
I'd dump it too for the old laptops... but 7 COA's don't grow on trees and decent linux support (read: not vesa) for any ATI/AMD gpu HD4000 series and older is non-existant. Same for intel chips i915 and older... IIRC no support for the latest xorg (but I don't have any more laptops in running condition with those, short a D400 needing charging repairs). What else am I to run on those? Vistrash?
And the actual i915 was probably at least better than that trash known as i815!
i815 was an outright crippled mess. Not just the paltry 512 MB RAM limit...
Graphics were messy, even for 2001 standards. My late 1990s Voodoo 3 would decimate it!Last edited by RJARRRPCGP; 02-27-2014, 04:52 PM.ASRock B550 PG Velocita

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
I still support some win2k boxes, the client has them physically isolated on their own LAN though.
I recently downloaded an iso of win2k pro (service pack 2) for repair purposes on these machines as I lost my disk...
It is possible to upgrade them to XP (some have XP on them already) but as far as I'm aware the software running on them won't accept anything newer (I do intend experimenting with upgrading one that came into the workshop to win7 as soon as I have time to image the HDD though)Comment

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
Windows 8 is the most vulnerable Windows OS
Microsoft's Windows 8 platform has been tagged by security research firm Secunia as having the most vulnerabilities of any Windows platform on the market.

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
Regarding the above^^
"If you are wondering why Windows 8 tops the charts, even though Microsoft touts the platform as more secure than its predecessors, the answer is quite simple; Flash. Because Flash is now baked into the modern instance of IE, any Flash vulnerability can now be tied into Windows 8 as well."
I'm not defending Win8 by any means, but I just think it's a little too sensationalist, atleast complain against the correct company: http://www.techspot.com/article/616-adobe-flash-fail/
I do aswell, but keep in mind it will be EOL at the same date as WinXP...
The BIG difference being that progman.exe was still present in W95 (and up to XP SP1 in fact) for you to use if that was your CHOICE, even though few people chose so as the then new desktop interface was well engineered and thoroughly tested and become an instant success.
That's how it works, you seduce people into a better product, as opposed to raping them into an inferior one.Last edited by Per Hansson; 02-28-2014, 11:39 AM."The one who says it cannot be done should never interrupt the one who is doing it."Comment

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
Your words:
Originally posted by Per Hansson... Being one of the most prolific sources of security vulnerabilities in Windows and other platforms, Adobe Flash Player needs no introduction. In spite of that reputation, and the fact that the rest of the industry is moving away from Flash, Microsoft surprised many of us by bundling the software with its operating system for the first time with Windows 8 ...
Guess the ongoing orchestrated FUDfest to ditch XP and 'update' to Tiles 8 on security grounds must then be 'scientific method':

I have a Dell E5470 that powers up and boots windows no problem. Using a non-standard universal type charger, it shuts down immediately if moved, (power short in that charger or AC power jack) because the battery has no charge and isn't charging orange/white lights blinking on the front. When first powered up, BIOS power alarm stated that it could not detect the voltage setting and I had to dis-able the message to get past this. It got into Windows fine, as long as not moved, so I dis-assembled it looking for a cold solder joint on the power jack that I thought might be lifting off the MB, but...
