    Re: Windows XP EOS plans

That's pretty much how I handle the XP boxen too. SP3 works for me plus fixing the DST change. The computers I have in use are pretty old. A Dell Optiplex GX270, an HP Pavillion a1102n, a Dell Latitude D630, and an HP Mini 2133. All of these were freebies to me. They all work pretty well except the HP Mini which is pretty slow and the screen is so tiny I can barely read it. My daughter plays with it once in a while. I haven't bought a new computer in over 20 years, I just get old stuff from people who do.

Dealing with idiots and XP is already getting to be a pain... THREE people in a row have installed the EoL update after I told them not to....and are now whining about the message pestering them to upgrade....All I could really do is say i told you so....and to check the box to 'not show this message again'...

Haha! Yeah, I think we saw that coming. I wonder how many are on the phone with "Hello, this Abe from the technical department calling about your PC" right about now?

Lack of productivity is what does Linux in for me as a daily user. Linux is great for servers, don't get me wrong.....but I'm far more productive on a winbox.

I've had people say that they need to update from 7 to Hate because they thought 7 was EOL. I've had others who thought they had to get macs because windows as a whole was EOL.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

I wouldn't go that far. as far as clean and most proficient operation, windows 2000 still holds the victory trophy on that one.....with XP being the runner up. Proficiency in windows has been a downward spiral since, if you're still using windows explorer for file management (which I am not)....

Nah, I'm not saying you did. I know you like it, but compared to our customers at work the last few weeks it's been:

Customer: WHY ARE YOU DISCONTINUING XP???
Me: Microsoft is discontinuing Windows XP. We are simply a computer repair shop and have no control over Microsoft or Windows XP.
Customer: BUT YOU WONT SELL XP ANYMORE???
Me: No, we've decided to stop offering XP desktops and laptops unless a customer requests them for a specific business program or other application.
Customer: I HATE MICROSOFT THEY ARE LETTING THE NSA FOLLOW US!!!! *runs out door flailing arms*
Me: Umm... That was random... Anyway... *conversation starts over*

Well, maybe not quite like that, but you know what I mean. One older guy did sit in our showroom for a long time yesterday (from when I get back from Starbucks and Subway at around 1PM, until closing time at 5PM) and complained obnoxiously to every other customer how we were in bed with Microsoft to rip him off...

I'll take Windows Hate over OSX any day.

Actually, I don't find it too bad on a basic office machine. I've ditched M$ office long ago in favour of OpenOffice (with the exception of Outlook, although I'd be quite happy to use Thunderbird or even Webmail for email). I wouldn't have too much of a problem using it as a word processor or emailer (which is all that a lot of users do anyway, even in some business situations). The main thing that keeps me from using it on my machines is because FSX doesn't work, and AFAIK, neither does my USB Oscilloscope.

I think that Microsoft is lying, at 8 of April visited the Microsoft XP windows update page, in which I had set as hidden ( do not bother me ) about a numerous updates in the past nine months.
By selecting un-hide and restore, three files become available for download, among them, the EOL nag time bomb.

In conclusion we are not safe yet from Microsoft. LOL

Microsoft hit a peak on desktop OSes with W2K Pro in my opinion as well. I'm ok with XP Pro but I always make it as much like W2K as I can. Windows Exploder sucks stock, but I tweak the hell out of it and manage ok for the most part.

Proficiency in windows has been a downward spiral since, if you're still using windows explorer for file management (which I am not)....

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

Windows XP will EOL when my PCs do. Of course, for most people, Teapo and the like will make sure this happens sooner rather than later.
