The AS suffix indicates it is a SATA hard drive which is the standard for computers made in 2004-5 timeframe or later..

Thanks; this hard drive was given to me and i was about to throw it out cause it was all dirty and it did not fit in most of my desktops, but coincidently today i did go install a fan in my Ati Amd 6450 video card in my main lenovo pc and for my surprise the plugs fit in my Lenovo Thinkcenter m71e i knew it but i had forget it,it's what happen when one is getting old, i did connected it to test if it was good,it had Win Vista on it, but it did not boot all the way, had errors and also needed name and password, then i had Xubuntu 1310 in a USB stick booted with it and tested it and it came up good, then installed linux and now i have an extra hard drive, what a luck, also by coincidence i was looking at the ram slots and see that i can add one more slot of 4gb ram to make it 8gb, well this day was a full day of surprises.

There are *still* people discovering SATA for the first time?

Anyway, this is how practically all hard drives (and optical drives) come now. It's almost impossible to find IDE drives now. In fact, my motherboard doesn't even have an IDE controller (6 SATA III ports, though).

Here's a comparison of the speeds:

        IDE (max.) - 1,064 MBit/s
        SATA I - 1,500 Mbit/s
        SATA II - 3,000 Mbit/s
        SATA III - 6,000 Mbit/s

Even cheap SSDs can saturate IDE or SATA I, and some expensive SSDs can saturate SATA II now. (I still think they moved to SATA because it's cheaper, though)

Also, IIRC, SATA has much higher total capacity than EIDE.

Perhaps EIDE would have gotten the larger capacities if they had continued to make them (as platter technology advanced).

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
            by federalhouse
            Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

            **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

            **What I've Tried So Far:**

PC case - Hard drive rails
            by tmcw
A friend gave me his old PC case (with MB, and PSU), but no hard drive rails, he said he only used the 2.5" SSD spot inside, and used an external hard drive for data. He said that he'd have a look for the supplied rails, but I doubt he'll find them.

So I was wondering if case manufacturers used any type of standard 3.5" hard drive rail?

I'm used to the various Dell hard drive caddies or rails (and HP and Lenovo to a lesser extent), or el cheapo cases where you screw through the frame to fix the drive.

Now, the case is a CiT Gaming Case, and...

bug of the month: write caching setting for the hard drive in device manager
            by ChaosLegionnaire
i recently bought a new wd re4 2tb with 2014 datecodes. when i got around to testing it tho in victoria hd tester, the write speed was very slow at 14 mb/s with a 256 sector transfer size. when i increased the transfer size to 1024 sectors, the write speed increased slightly to 44 mb/s. read speeds and sector verify speeds were fine and at normal speeds.

so i just ass-u-med the drive's poor performance was due to it being an advanced format drive and i was using it on winxp. when i tried cloning my system disk to this wd re4 2tb drive and writing to it in linux, the write speed...
