Re: 2-dimensional barcodes
I recall there being a command line 2d barcode generator, although the name of it i am drawing a blank on at the moment. Just found it, it's qrencode from linux..

Re: Post your system.......
Just recently upgraded to Skylake from Haswell, and from mini-ITX to microATX at the same time, as i figure it'll be the last 7 box for me. Just did a test clone of 7 to a fresh SSD and it migrated cleanly over, with just a reactivation needed since all the hardware changed.
So far i've been impressed by Skylake's overclocking ability and cooler temps relative to Haswell, with roughly equivalent cooling. So far seeing CPU temps about 15 to 20 C cooler relative to Haswell when redlined in latest version of Prime95 with 200MHz minimum clock...

Re: MSI N1996 Motherboard with bad timer
the timer chip isn't a discrete part, it's either part of the super i/o chip or the southbridge. Either way you'll be hard pressed to get a replacement and actually swap it out unless you work with high pincount SMT or BGA packages.

Re: segate hard drive connections?
The AS suffix indicates it is a SATA hard drive which is the standard for computers made in 2004-5 timeframe or later..

nice old chipsThe bulk of your motorola chips is from '75, so def worth some money, if not for use.

Re: SSD suggestions
newegg did have a 256G Toshiba on sale for ~150 just recently, i picked one up just to try it out.. I'm sure it'll be OK on the long term, but we'll see..

Re: SSD suggestions
That would be correct.. never had one myself, but have heard of numerous issues with them.. I've used Crucial, Intel, Samsung, Corsair with no issues....

We use HP Procurve's here, they've always treated me well for reliablity..

Re: Broken am3+ socket -- info?
some sockets are through hole, but most are surface mount today.. It'll be a difficult process either way.. It'll probably take a hot air rework station to get the old socket off. It might be possible to "pop" the socket back together again if the plastic parts aren't broken off.

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
pretty sure you want to populate A1 and A2 of each CPU first.. then at least you could see if it changes to dual channel mode. I was running it with all 8 DIMM's populated with identical reg ECC dimm's, so i never ran in any other than dual channel.

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
Good to see you have it up and runningI think you might want to put the DIMM's in the black slots only to start with, then add them to the blues if you add more memory in the future. I didn't see anything specific about DIMM population though in the manual, so maybe you have it right.. I'd verify it's running in dual channel mode using cpu-z or another app like that..

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
Yup, that's a limitation of the Opteron's integrated DDR controller. If you have a board with 8 slots per CPU, it's limited to 266 so even slower.. Although it should auto drop the speed to 333 if all 4 are populated.. If you only have 4 working DIMM's i would put two per CPU, so you get the most speed at least for testing!!

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
maybe do a test install of Win 7 x64?? you don't have to enter a product key, it'll let you run for a while without one, that way you could test stability before you buy any more RAM.. I did have 8 1G DIMM's in it, so i know all 8 DIMM slots should be good.

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
as for your existing Win XP 64 bit install, that would probably BSOD no matter what, as you would probably have the wrong chipset drivers loaded, as i assume the last motherboard to boot that OS had a different chipset.

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
i had a typo in the post about how i was running that board.. I had a PCIe 9400GT in the top PCIe slot, so that definately should work OK.. when you put two cards in SLI, i'm not sure if the PC will show a POST display on the second card..
I was running 8 pin CPU power and the 24 pin ATX connector, as the acbel 550W PSU had both of those.. I don't recall any other connectors on the motherboard itself though

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
It was running with (8) 1GB sticks of Reg ECC DDR, that were HP server pulls and a pair of Opteron 848's. I did run memtest on it over the weekend before i pulled the board from the system it was in. ECC should have been enabled already. It had one of the 550W AcBel PSU's running it. I never did try the second PCI slot, it had a 9400GT in the top PCIe slot.
