    Windows Updates CD

I am interested in making a CD from all of the Windows XP Updates that I have downloaded. (I am so tired of re-downloading when I do a fresh install!)

Where do the Windows Updates download to by default? I am looking in C:\Windows and see files such as "$NtUninstallKB885250$" - are there any more besides these?

And, to install from that CD, I am assuming I will have to open each file folder to find the application. I do remember reading to put together a list that shows when each update was distributed and install each chronologically; so I guess this is something else I will need to either find or put together?. (Wow, I am hearing a voice in my head saying something about slipstreaming an installation cd. However, I am ignoring that voice because I would like to have a CD with just updates and service patches incase I am working on someone else's computer or just want to share them. LOL Go Away Little Voices)

Is'nt there an option for slipstreaming were in you could just have the comapct the updates or something into one install CD?

Oh yeah you want to build a hotfix type disk I just re read you post
Thats dooable too...just not sure how

yeah slipstreaming I think would be what you want to do.

from memory it isn't that hard but I have never really played with it.

The idea being you build a custom install disk with the MB drivers and updates etc on to a single cd DVD
I think you can get these to do a full install without you having to answer prompts too (sort of like a bat file)

I think there was even a proggie of some kind out on the net to help you build them

here one site on it for winxp sp2

a google search of sites slipstreaming CD

Someone here would be able to give you a better idea I guess

if you find you have to reinstall often its probably worth the trouble

      HTH

      Cheers

grss1982 we were all noobs once and in a lot of ways I still am....its all a learning curve and its constantly changing with computers thats for sure

          Re: Windows Updates CD

It can be done for sure! However I do not remember the steps required to download the hotfixes on the hard drive. It is an option within Windows Update (somewhere buried). Having said this I think an extremely good option is to integrate these hotfixes onto your installation of Windows. I am currently going through this process. There are many good applications that can slipstream hotfixes as well as do other stuff. The ones that I recommend are:

          * nLite - http://www.nliteos.com/
          * RyanVM Integrator - http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/

In fact, the creator of the RyanVM Integrator makes many addons as well and hosts addons that others have created. It has all the latest updates, latest DirectX and various other programs that can be integrated into the install process of Windows on his website in a nice compressed format that can be used with nLite or RyanVM Integrator. Oh I forgot another great site:

          http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/

This website probably has the answer to your specific query. Has loads of good information!

            Re: Windows Updates CD

What prompted this question is that I just got my dad's old Gateway desktop going again. I reinstalled the OS, WinXP Home, and now am looking at the little yellow Windows Update shield icon. Clicking on the icon is showing me a whole shit load of updates that will have to be done - like hours and hours. I am on a slow connection (64k dsl) and am not looking forward to doing the updates. If I could get the updates off my computer, which is current, that would save me a ton of hours. Then, I was thinking that I should take this one step further and make a CD with updates current through this month.

Anyway, I had, in the past, downloaded the SP2 update and keep that handy. That helps on time to run that off of a CD instead of having to download. I got my dad's computer update up through SP2.

I just thought I'd post here with my question. I have read something before in a Langalist newsletter (www.langalist.com), so I'll check out his archives and the links I got here today. Mahalo. :-)

Wow, thanks for the links guys. "Hotfixes" is the term I definitely want to be using to find information. There are good sites on those links - I don't think that I need to search through the langa archives - ya!

Again, thank you so much! Have a good day.....Or night for the guys down under ;-).

                Thanks Shadow

I did have a proggie that sort of helps make them, got it off one of the Aust pc mags but cant remember the name of it....

I think they did an article on building these and how to get the hotfixes too if memory serves also Bart I think....what mag dont know but it would be here somewhere.

That unattended site was in the back of my mind but of course no idea were I put the link or what it was called, just remembered the page.

                  Re: Windows Updates CD

I first read about nLite in an Australian PC Magazine too. It was APC. I got interested in it and found out about the other links. I am currently making an automated install DVD of Windows XP Professional, complete with all service packs, hotfixes and commonly used programs installed. I have done 95% of the work at the moment. I am currently trying to integrate all of my drivers as well. This seems to be slightly more difficult than integrating normal applications!

Once the hard work is done, I can just pop in the DVD and go away for awhile and Windows will install itself fully! Can't wait to give it a run when I am finished!

                    Re: Windows Updates CD

                    Found it

                    it was autostreamer

                    here a tut on Autostreamer

Dont know if its as good a Nlite (looks to be more you can do with that)

haven't used it and have only really just touched on autostreamer.

Guess if you get down the mechanics of how they do things you probably could do it yourself anyway.
(like you can write HTML web pages in Notepad...but would you want to?)

They just make it a bit easier for you by the looks of it

thanks again shadow, hope it works out well for you.

A post on the issues you have getting the drivers installed might well be of value to people too.

                    Cheers

                      Re: Windows Updates CD

I have a PC How-To magazine that describes the process. It was put out by MaximumPC. When I checked their web site for an online version, I noticed that the slipstream process will be covered in next month's issue. If you would like a paper copy of how to do this, you may want to pick one up.

                        Re: Windows Updates CD

This has value especially after Microsoft takes XP off active life support. Considering how hard they are pushing New Coke (Vista), they will probably put XP on non-support pretty soon.

It would be nice to have a CD floating around the Internet that lets XP builders continue to apply the hotfixes.
