  • Re: Biostar TForce 550 SE 5.x mobo integrated lan problem

My homegrown computer is on the internet via a good cable using the integrated lan port. Pew. I am so amazing! Well, I will chalk this one up for experience! I need to test my home-made cables before I assume that they are ok.

LOL. Well, what I am trying to figure out is how much water to give this thing. I think that this seed must have come from a decent computer, but I just don't quite have a green thumb. ;-)...

  • Answer to Re: Biostar TForce 550 SE 5.x mobo integrated lan problem

Ok.....I was disgusted, so I took the homegrown computer off line and am using another one in the same spot. When I put my trusted computer in the same spot, my lan connection wasn't working.

Lo and Behold - I had two cat5 cables that must not be wired right. I had made 3 cables and the first worked fine, so I assumed that the second and third ones were ok. So much for my cabling skills.

I hooked up a store-bought cable on the trusty computer and I have an internet connection again. Hmmmph....

  • Re: Biostar TForce 550 SE 5.x mobo integrated lan problem

    Hi Fizzycapola,

Do you know how a NIC will have the green light on when installed in a computer and will blink yellow when the internet connection is active and sending data?

Well, my NIC isn't even showing a green light like there is no power there. I don't recall seeing a light before I started seriously tackling the wireless connection issue. This was my son's desktop that he built, when he moved I assumed the "pleasure" of operating the machine. He had connected to the internet occasionally...

  • Re: Biostar TForce 550 SE 5.x mobo integrated lan problem

Hi 370forlife, thanks for responding. I am guilty for not posting everything here. I did try installing a separate PCI NIC, but it is coming up with the message that it is not plugged in also - when it is. I tried different cables with no luck. I considered the ports on the router being bad, but the router ports were ok before I moved the router to a central location in attempts to get a better wireless signal.

I read somewhere online that someone else had the same kind of problem - even with the PCI NIC "cable...

  • Biostar TForce 550 SE 5.x mobo integrated lan problem

    Hi everyone!

I am working on a homegrown computer that has a Biostar TForce 550 SE 5.x mobo. It has an integrated lan device, but a wireless device was being used. The wireless kept having issues, so as part of the steps to resolve these issues, I had disabled the integrated lan, which looked like it was working ok in the computer device manager. I hadn't been able to get the wireless connection issue resolved, so we were going to use the wired connection. When I went to enable the integrated lan, I was able to "enable" it; but the computer device manager and the network...

  • Dell Dimension 300? Is there such a computer?

I was looking at an ad for a Dell Dimension 300 for sale (2002 model) and can't find this. Has anyone heard of a 300?

  • Re: HP pavillion 503w motherboard

Hi kc8adu. Thanks for responding. The owner said that the computer would boot up, but that the monitor would "go to sleep" pretty quickly and frequently - she couldn't get any work done. I opened up the case and saw the bad caps on the side of the board between the cpu and the ports - there's at least 8 bad caps around that area. I took the mobo out and looked on the underside; I can see where the board got pretty warm because of the heat the caps put off because it has browned some. Would I have to consider the board damaged, or how brown...

  • Re: HP pavillion 503w motherboard

Hi All! It's been awhile since I visited! I have another project, so decided to visit here first. I am looking at an HP pavilion a335w desktop. From what I can find, it looks like it was part of a WalMart 2003 Christmas special package (according to HP's site). I was reading their directions to determine what motherboard I have, but am not seeing the numbers/letters they are saying I should be seeing. On the back of the HP, below the model number, is the s/n MXM34301RY. There's another s/n, but it also doesn't tell me the board manu. The board does...

  • Thanks for the input

I do remember reading (where???) that the mobos usually go too, so I was glad to see that it didn't :-).

Thanks for the input about the size of the chassis. I was under the impression it was unique -- but, I haven't dealt with these, so was glad to be able to post somewhere where others do deal with these. Cool!

Again, thank you both for your input.

  • Replacing Bestec ATX-250-12E psu with.....

I was researching on replacing a Bestec ATX-250-12E psu and so far have only come across replacement model Bestec ATX-300-12E. Size of the unit appears to be unique. Any suggestions of other models besides the 300, or is the 300 okay?

The psu is out of an old eMachine (2002?) that "just quit working." I tried to boot it up and nothing happened. Put in my spare psu and the computer booted.

Hey, what a good idea! Beats paying $100+ for a 5"x7" digital frame. Links bookmarked.

  • Re: Ubuntu v6.10 - comments, thoughts?

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the comments. I only started using computers on a regular basis in 1998 and then it was Win98 that just came out, so that was my introduction. After seeing Vista (on someone else's machine), I think that Vista is "pretty," but maybe that's it. I have XP Home on this machine and 98Lite on another. My son wants to install Ubuntu on the laptop he is using; maybe that would be a good place for me to learn. The laptop is running XP Pro right now; I think he's holding off because he is not sure about the...

Does anyone have comments or thoughts about the Ubuntu v6.10? Seems I remember hearing somewhere (here?) that a newer version was coming out and it was supposed to be better? Limit on a PC's age or hardware?

Here's a link below about Windows XP Home (and Media Center) having a deadline for support. I, personally, am considering migrating to another OS eventually - Linux or Mac (or both?).
