Heatsink fan replacement

Ok...I have a couple of these Cooler Master HCC-002 copper heatsinks. I've had them for what seems like an eternity. One of the fans is making noise and I feel that its not long for this world. The original stats for the HCC is here.

So....what I need is a reliable replacement for that fan. Anyone have a good source??? I checked a couple of usual sources, but there weren't any fans. I don't want to replace the heatsinks since they are good and a while back I lapped both the heatsinks and the CPUs. Ok....I was in ND and bored.


Any ideas?????

stretch, have you tried peeling back the sticker on the center of the fan to put some oil on it. I have done this to several case fans and my northbridge fan and now they are working well. Can't remember the name of the spray lube I used on them, but I believe it's the stuff with teflon.

Delta fans are well known for being loud. They spin fast (6800 rpm) and move a lot of air. This model has ball bearings, so noise will increase but it probably won't seize as soon as sleeve bearings.

Unless you need the air flow, look into a Panaflo fan at a slower RPM. They have oil sealed bearings and run silent for a very long time. I install Panaflo fans in all my client machines.

i think its a 60mm fan. probably the best bet would be to get a 60-80mm adapter and put an 80mm fan on it.

i second the panaflo choice.

This one gets loud, then quiet, then loud again. Does that at about 2 or 3 minute intervals....or there abouts.

I'll look into the Panaflos.


Anything to get rid of this noise.

If You have the room (I like will's idea and have done it) use a 60 to 80mm adapter and a 80X38mm fan.
According to this http://gizzo.8m.com/fans/fan60.html your 60X25@6800rpm is probably around 40cfm. The on again off again is probably thermal cycling.

For thermal protection the CPU's fan must have a for real sensor wire, many three wire Chinaflos lack this. They will have a third wire(generally yellow) but it is a dumby. (The need for a sensor wire can be turned off in the BIOS but why do it? )

Not cheap but consider http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/de80ef1.html All the EFB Deltas are real three wire fans. I am fond of and use the 92X38s in low and medium speed whenever I can. Triple bladed fans have a deeper more pleasent sound and work well in free air or on sinks with wide fin spacing, as your sinks have. For real tight finned sinks the 7+ bladed fans are best.

I would not reduce cfm no matter what fan you select and would use ball bearing fans inside PSUs or on CPUs because of the high temp enviroment.
Bronze sleeve bearing fans don't do well with lots of heat. Ceramic bearinged fans might be hard to find in the cfm you need but would do well in heat.

thats what my stock intel p4 fan does. time to replace. the next case i get i will look into dust filters. i dont think dust is very good for the fans.

i need a decent heatsink for s478 that will allow an 80mm fan to be attached. there is 100% overclocking bs available here, all the ~1kg specials.

Galvanized, your input is much appreciated. Don't assume I know anything....like Will with sex, I fake it real well.

Yeah....the case is pretty dusty. I'm sure thats what brought this on. If I kept better house-keeping of the cases, it probably wouldn't have happened.

Oh well.....the cost of being lazy.

Make doesn't matter as much as style. The first sort I have for their lower depth only.

General rule for applying an adaptor onto a square heatinks is to use a square adaptor.

Although trimming is possible to make round more square I've done this with my old heatsink and it knocked 2oC off CPU temp.
