Just use whatever you feel works the best... There's nothing wrong with M$ OS really, just that I want something more open (which precludes MacOS/iOS/etc., too)... and I'm willing to deal with Linux nuances (I've been pretty much Windows-free, MacOS-free for several years now).

Unfortunately I hope hardware manufacturers make their hardware...OS agnostic...

          *sigh*

I tried several things to get Ubuntu 12.10 working, including using three different AGP video cards. Nothing changed. So I resorted to a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 which loaded fine and seems to be working fine. I think Ubuntu 12.10 must have some bugs they didn't know about. So I will just work with 12.04 until 13.04 comes out.

12.10 is a pile of crap. The x.10 releases always have sucked more than the x.04's but 12.10 is particularly bad. I only run it because I happen to have compatible hardware, I don't mind a bit of tweaking, and I wanted a Debian based form of gnome 3.6.

Yeah 12.10 is buggy. You can't even mount any drive when running live off CD or USB, because they changed some stuff and forgot about the live user, assumed everybody installs it. It takes a couple of sudo commands to fix it.

12.04 FTW. The possibly better distros would be:

                  1: Gentoo

                  2: SliTaz

3: Puppy (If you don't mind constantly running as root with zero permissions enforcement.)

I just compiled an RT 3.4.29 kernel on Precise Puppy 5.4.3. (Heads up, your sound will be wiped out if you don't compile the sound drivers as modules!)
And if you get the dreaded "llvmpipe" renderer instead of DRI, it's probably because you didn't enable KMS!

                      Hello,

this is a very strange Problem:

Notebook hang instantly on Boot. BIOS is accesable.
Windows: instant after showing "loading circle", even Windows Boot Stick hang instant (even without installed SSD/NVME )
Linux: instantly (if Linux Boot in leagacy Mode with log messages: Machine Check exception after 0.25 sec)

                      i have tried:
                      - only one RAM Stick, another working RAM, both RAM channel
                      - BIOS Flash to newest Version F.50, BIOS Reset
                      - Memtest86 hang instant at Test 2
                      - HP UEFI Diagnostic wont find...

Requests to Intel Flash Programming Tool for Linux Ubuntu x86_64
                      by tsavpyn
                      Dear all,
I forgot my BIOS password of my Surface Pro 3, I searched for solutions for a long time and knew that by using FPT to dump my bios to bin file and using decryptor, I can get my BIOS password.
Now I have a problem that I am unable to dump my BIOS into bin file.

My Surface Pro 3 currently runs on Ubuntu 22.04, with Secure Boot enabled and Boot From SSD Only.

I searched for FPT but there is no Linux version and none of them work.
I hereby request a copy of Intel Flash Programming Tool for Linux x64.
I would really appreciate it if anyone...

MS Surface Book 3 - Keyboard works only in UEFI/Linux
                      by survivalbloke
This is a very weird issue which I'm having trouble finding a common thread.

The keyboard is registering keypresses in either the UEFI, or a live Linux USB environment - I used Ubuntu for testing. The keyboard backlight is lit.

The keyboard is registering keypresses in Windows or any Windows-related bootable device. For example, it does not work in Hirens Recue or a Windows 11 bootable installer.

When booted to Windows, not only is the keyboard not registering keypresses, but my USB keyboard is not either!

                      USB mouse and integrated trackpad...

SPD reading/writing under Linux and/or Windows
                      by keepread
                      Hi all,
Where can I find the mysterious 'eeprom' kernel module that some use under Linux to read/write SPD?
I installed 'i2c-tools' and got 'decode-dimms' tool under Debian but not under Fedora, but both of them are missing the 'eeprom' module.
Also tried the SPD.exe tool from EVGA, which correctly lists all of the DIMM slots but reads zeroes from all of them.
Basically I need to dump SPD from some modules that were sold to me as DDR-1866 but are made of DDR-1600 chips, and they do not work. There is no access to RAM clock rate in the BIOS, so I am SOL unless I can rebin...
