    Re: a giiiiiiiift

ok. i'm starting to see whats going on here. they must of messed with the ich in the last bios. driverpacks was putting iastor3 (intel AHCI) from the driverpacks. After a ton of research I found out this is a GL960 chipset, and therefore has a ich8m southbridge. Last time I tried to nlite drivers into a windows install it did nothing. did not put them in textmode. never made an $oem$ folder too. Intel stopped supporting ICH8 (but not 7 or 9) so I found an old iastor to use. Hopefully this other iso of xp pro will take it

theere we go. I don't know why the bios update stopped the iastor3 driver from working post install but the method above with nlite worked, so far

Yup, Intel stopped supporting ICH8M but oddly continues to support ICH7R...

There's a special updated driver floating around for ICH8M, I have to look on my laptop for it...

The boot code usually gives that message only on real early hardware, on 386s and the like, because of using a hard disk drive that's bigger than the BIOS recognizes and probably tries to access data that's beyond a BIOS limit.

Reminds me of connecting a Quantum ProDrive LPS 170 MB HDD to my Compaq DeskPro 386.

Trying to boot from that HDD, which had Windows 95 on it, resulted in that message.

Find out that I needed to use a special boot loader to get around that.

I found it. nlited it into xp just fine. installed great

anyone have any idea how to get this thing to change brightness with the fn+F6/F7 keys? it actually worked with no display drivers installed but with the intel express 965 drivers installed it does nothing.

also the fn+up and fn+down keys do not change volume, it actually did on the previous install. hmm. I tried other pieces of Toshiba software for this laptop from thier site and the ones that actually installed, had nothing to do with it

I think you need the toshiba value added package for the hotkeys to work properly.

yeah I tried that with no luck. it refuses to install on winxp. Might have to win7 this after all.

what do you guys think of 6-cell generic ebay batteries (default for the L45 is 4 cell)

                this is a temptation:
                http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Cell-5200m...item4d016006ce

I also see some 6 cell 4400 mah, where the one above is higher

I could get an original 6 cell toshiba 4000 mah for $50, ick or

                http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-10-8V-Re...item41658dc73a

                5200 mah

still worried about getting anything from china

anyone got 2x2ddr2-800 sodimms they're willing to sell me?

I don't have a problem with generic batteries. My Thinkpad T60 (which I'm posting from now) is currently running off one. They do seem to fade a bit quicker than genuine ones, though.

UGH. I'm having a different problem on this one. The FN+brightness keys work just fine, but the lid acpi trigger will not work. It worked in XP after I installed the ATK 0100 driver, now the lid trigger just will not put it in sleep mode

                                        How?

well I installed XP and it was the same thing this time. No sleep. Then I realized when I first installed XP I installed an ATK 0100 from ASUS. I put 7 back on, found the atk 0100 for the G50 series asus laptop, and boom. It even installed an OSD when I mute, change brightness, or do any other function. But since this is a toshiba, the 'brightness' would only go up half way on the brightness marker. I took the osd programs out of startup. Then it used an older OSD (the one from XP). I actually had to find the program files/asus folder and rename the osd.exe so it would not load. Brightness, sound, mute work just fine with the FN keys now, as does the lid sleep trigger

Asus could of been a dick about it and checked hardware and give me a big finger on this software but no such thing happened. thank you asus

One thing about this top is its listed under toshiba as having a max of 2gb of ram, well I have a 1gb and 2gb stick in it and it works fine. but it is having some trouble with the 2gb stick in alot A, windows won't boot, memtest fails to even try to start.

with the 2gb stick in slot b and 1gb in slot A, it works great, memtest runs fine. what do you guys think?
