• Re: Precision 650 problem

Unfortunately not the Hard drive. I unplugged the two and plugged in a known good one. It still ended up with the Dell boot device menu being the last thing that was displayed.

    Thanks for the ideas.TB

  • Precision 650 problem

    Hi

I have a Precision 650 sitting here that is circling the drain.

I had two of these before and fixed one with a capacitor kit from here. The other one it looked as if someone had tried recapping before and they may have damaged something.

The current problem is it was slow. Then it started with the BSOD, Then it would even BSOD trying a windows re-install.
Now it shows the Dell logo and that is it.

I do not see any obviously bad capacitors. Should I go ahead and order another cap kit from here or am I wasting my time and money....

  • Re: SSD recommendations

The hard drive light going crazy means something is always accessing it.In the old days that usually meant not enough RAM.

Even in that case a SSD would help because it would speed up the virtual memory. Has it been like that since new?

I upgraded to SSD drives for much improved performance in some areas.

    Startup and shut down times.
    Programs open much faster
files loaded from the SSD drive load faster.
Anything loaded or written to the Hard Drive

    They won't help speed up...

  • Re: SSD recommendations

For the future users that may read this.

I run 3 Intel 320 Series in my desktop and two laptops. I did the firmware update after backing up the drives first, just in case. Two Samsungs and a Kingston. I put a 160Gb Intel SSD in the desktop I built for my brother with a I7 2600. It is fast.
2 weekends ago I backed it up and updated the firmware. Last weekend I restored from the backup due to virus issues.

None of these are SATA6 but they work.
I bought originally based on user reviews and reliability ratings from the...

  • Re: sold a bad motherboard

That's interesting on the USB ports. I ran that one I had for several years with externals hooked up to the USB ports some of the time. I finally sold it on to someone and last I heard it was still running.

When you say EMI do you mean RF being picked up on the USB cable?

I will say that so far (Knock Wood) the Intel SSDs I have used in mine and my Brothers have been good. I did back them up and update the firmware for the 320 Series bug fix.

    Cheers...

  • Re: Dell SX280 "Phrizbee" MOBO Recap?

Dell didn't replace all of the 6.3v 2200uFs with polies or the 16v 1500uFs on this one. Came back for 2nd failure of those caps they skipped. Probably didn't help that the machine had all of the vents jammed 100% with dust.
Yup pretty much what I've seen here with regards to the ones that Dell had repaired. Thay should have done all the 2200Uf 6.3v.

I've got one here that needs repair for the 2200ufs caps that Dell didn't change.

In fact I just put in an order here for the necessary...

  • Re: sold a bad motherboard

I find it odd that so many are down on ASUS motherboards. I ran one of the P4P800 series motherboards 24 hours a day for weeks at a time doing batch video encoding where the CPU is at 100% and never a problem.

My current I7 first gen motherboard and the system I built for my Brother using a second gen I7 both use ASUS motherboards and never a crash.

Maybe because I don't overclock and they have Intel chipsets? Intel boot drives and Seagate or Hitachi data drives. So far no problems. Not that I'm superstitious but knock wood...

  • Re: Can hardly believe how much damage this virus did

If no one has run a temp file cleaner on the computer then go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com and get a copy of unhide.exe, It typically will unhide all the hidden files that the virus hides and copy back all of the start menu shortcuts that the virus moves to a temp folder to scare the owner that the hard drive is going bad and to pay for the program to save it.Re: Can hardly believe how much dama...n the computer...

  • Re: sold a bad motherboard

This may be a stupid question did you check to see if it had warranty with ASUS. I believe they give years of warranty. If you can make it look new where you were working........

And if they say no warranty that is one we scrapped then you have proof to go after the seller.

The way I think about it quite simple. If the part isn't needed the manufacturer would have saved their money and not installed them....

  • Re: MacBook Pro Hard Disck to SSD Ocz Agility 3...

The Intel from my research are not the fastest. Just the most reliable. From my reading the MacBook Pro OS also does not support trim on the SSD

And yes I would say any SSD will improve the computer. I put one in an older single core and the startup time is much better and the applications load real fast. I now do not mind using it. I cloned the old drive as I didn't want to have to start over with a faster computer and set everything up again. I'm a bit lazy that way.

My Desktop I do not mind re-doing...

  • Re: MacBook Pro Hard Disck to SSD Ocz Agility 3...

real shame they used that brand of SSD. I'm only using Intel SSDs. It may not be the fastest SSD like the OCZ, However the OCZ has a poor reliability record. They really don't get along with Dell laptops BTW. I chose Reliable over speed.

    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?84227-Laptop-Notebook-users-with-issues-on-Vertex2-Agility2
For details. the OCZ they recommend not cloning, with the Intel I just cloned the existing drive and done Intel provides cloning S/W too.Re: MacBook Pro...

  • Re: Laptop upgrade advice

The R52 tends to have the same video chip problem as the T41, T42 series from what I've seen. The ATI chip needs to be reballed as it gets older.

AS a BTB/FWIW Windows XP will be getting critical security updates and extended support until April 8, 2014. There is some life left in it.

Microsoft would have ticked off some of the companies selling computers if they stopped support now. Toshiba and Dell were still selling select business models with XP up to two years ago more or less.

    Example: Satellite Pro® S300-EZ1512,...

  • Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

FWIW Most security forums I visit advise against registry cleaners.

I did some tests on a totally clean new windows install with different registry cleaners and they all claimed to find problems.

If Microsoft wants to install that way, maybe they aren't real errors.
