    Funky laptop problem

I have a clients Dell Inspiron 710m here that was dropped down a flight of stairs. The exterior is pretty much destroyed. Anyway, it still boots and works (albeit broken LCD).
Only problem is this... when I put another 2.5" PATA HDD in, it doesn't spin up. I've tried 3x different HDDs to no luck at all. However the original Fujitsu HDD will spin up but not get recognized in the BIOS but when I move it to another PC it works fine so I recovered all the files from there.
    What's going on here?

I know its a daft thing to suggest but does this model use the dell hard disk connector adaptor and are you putting one on the disks you try?

Maybe the fall cracked some of the solder joints on the laptop's hdd connector?

After a fall down a flight of stairs, there's no telling. Cracked PCB or broken solder joints would be my guess...

How does one drop a laptop down a flight of stairs!? Must be some bozo like one of the M6300's I was recently given......some chick managed to slam the screen portion in the trunk of a car....the end result there wasnt pretty...

Another daft idea - What size replacements were you using I believe some models will only take a 120gb disk or one with OS on 120 gb partition

That's the bit which confuses me badly. Only the Fujitsu drive will spin up. The others won't budge.

And in response to TC, neither can I understand how one drops a laptop down some stairs... and yes, owner is a woman!

A few days ago my laptop gave me problems, when I wanted to turn it on to my surprise without charging so I did not put much importance on it, after that I turned it on with a charger, it turned on and charged the laptop, the problem with the laptop is that when it is turned off it turns to turn on after seconds, sometimes at 2 or sometimes at 8, other than that it works normally, I already checked many things, I changed a mosfet at the charge input to a pnp but it remained the same, after that I checked and I did not find anything outside Normally, before that, it had a failure where I changed...

Weird problem, laptop stays on when connected to another pc
                  by versionlab
Hi, I want to ask for advice about an interesting issue I've been having with a sony vaio laptop.

Client came and said that "a desklamp touched the back of the lid while laptop was operating normally and it caused the office's circuit breaker to trip. Laptop had never turned on since".

After taking the laptop apart (checked dc adapter everythin ok), I found a faulty MOSFET on the motherboard which I replaced. Laptop managed to turn on. However, while booting it shut down. Nothing else seemed faulty and thermals were ok. Shutting down was coming at random...
