    Don't press the red button...

Just seen a video demo of an SSD that has two self destruct buttons... the first one (the green button) you press and it automatically wipes the drive by overwriting the contents, the second button (the red one) physically destroys the data storage chips. And when I say destroy, I mean send high amperage pulse into them literally causing them to heat up to the point where they smoke and the dies crack. I could see how this could be useful for someone wishing to hide their data, but I can see how this would cause quite a few expensive oopsies too.

If you ask me the makers of the invincible SSD need to have those flip up button covers like on fighter jet control sticks or, reconfigure the their button to where if the computer case is opened by someone who shouldn't it initializes the self destruct sequence.

Re: Don't press the red button...

    Let's see here..

    fake-ass CGI smoke? check!
fake photoshopped PCB shot with swirls, "bent" traces and silkscreen marks and not a single trace of soot anywhere around the ICs or NANDs? check!

Not to mention shorting 12V from the SATA power connector directly to the ICs and NANDs would at best make the short circuit protection (SCP) of the power supply trip and shut it down before it could do any serious damage like actually frying the chips to the full extent.

    This is just plain garbage

        and no its real

I'm guessing the red button activates a high voltage transformer of some kind and shunts all that power to the flash chips

I'm suprised nobody came up with something similar for a HDD. Shunt all 12v to em coils on each side of each platter.

hmm, I wonder how this company is going to handle warranty's. Its an expensive 'to be destroyed' product.

It's not invincible. It can actually be destroyed ... by itself

Yes, but at least Quantum and Hitachi never said that the deathstars were invincible.

If you look closely, the computer looks fake too. Besides its position on the table, check out the way the fan is spinning at 2:15 and afterwards.

I don't doubt that they actually made a drive with a self-destruct function (it's even on their official website) - but the video is faked, poorly at that.

Re: Don't press the red button...

Chips that can be destroyed like this existed before, the technology is not new.

There are chips made with self destruct regions in them.. they inject or insert in the silicon die some material that can be triggered to cause excessive heat and melt the insides.

With SSD, I don't know how effective it is. Someone with an electronic microscope could potentially determine if the bits are 1 or 0 by the state of the elements in the chip so if an area of the chip remains untouched, data can be potentially retrieved.

It just doesn't seem like something full proof.

Possibly, but considering how time and labor intensive such a retrieval operation would be with zero guarantees of success probably the only time the government (they being the ones who would most likely have the tech and resources available to even achieve such a feat) would even consider using such drastic measures is on the hard drive of osama bin ladin himself.

Which the US already found. They got a huge pile of intelligence info during the 5/1/2011 raid... like 20 hard drives and a few hundred flash drives. Only two Al-Qaeda events had no documentation on those drives...
