Get Firefox 10 on PowerPC macs

Sick of Firefox 3.6's slow performance, "update your browser" messages on websites, and not having the new features of newer versions...
Or maybe you're like me and you just hate old software?

Solution is much easier than you think...

Re: Get Firefox 10 on PowerPC macs

Newer versions were actually slower for me, and they use much more RAM so I can't really use them. 3.6's performance is fine. The only thing that really bothers me is that when I first start it (after the computer has been shut down), it does some long ass weird HDD read/write for up to a minute or 2 (sometimes even more) and that slows down my computer to a halt (it's even worse on my Pentium 3 laptop, where the motherboard only does UDMA-2 mode).

IE6 is the best in terms of speed and RAM efficiency, but almost nothing supports it anymore so it runs like crap, if it even runs the website at all. Hence why I almost completely stopped using it. It is still useful for a few things, though - namely getting "streaming" content from some websites via copying from the "Temporary Internet Files" folder.

IE6 is awful in terms of security, same with 7, 8, and 9

use FF 3x if your computer sucks, if you have 2GB of ram or more, go ahead with 10. right now i'm running 14 alpha nightly 64-bit, but I have a very good computer. Still, it runs great with win7, not sure about xp, the hardware acceleration sometimes has quirks with xp

I can't stand what ff9+ did with the status bar....otherwise I'd run it... they just can't leave well enough alone...and I've got a crazy powerful system....I dont think it'd have any trouble running any browser....

FFX11 actually runs pretty well, even on the underpowered server (Atom D425 1.8GHz singlecore w. HT & 2GB RAM).
Attached a screenshot of what it looks like right now. Can't stand any of the new crap with the menus, status bar and whatnot. Let alone the weekly major version release crap. Just because it's "modern" doesn't mean it's useful/wanted by the users. Mozilla doesn't seem to get that apparently..

Standard set of plugins for me right now:
Adblock Plus, Flashblock, Download Helper, Session Manager, Status 4 Evar

Agreed, as soon as I got the new version installed I modded the crap out of it so it looked normal again.

I/actually prefer the new interface. Yes, there are a few annoying thing about it, but if given enough time I'm sure they'll be fixed. Firefox 10 runs a lot faster on my g5 than 3.6. Seriously, like double the speed...
              And the g5 has 7gb ram :-)

Yea, that took care of 10 for me, thanks.....now I can tolerate it. I tried 11 on a crap system... thumbs down. I'll let it season some more.

Re: Get Firefox 10 on PowerPC macs

I don't know why people need a status bar telling them for 1/2 a second they're transferring every single JPG off the a website. Most people don't need that. The new firefox bar only tells when its connecting, resolving DNS, waiting for the site to respond, and when it disappears, you know its done. Who needs more then that

Nightly (Alpha Release) without a persona is pretty cool under win7, I like how the transparency is done, though I kind of wish it would make personas transparent.

(oh yes and nightly is available in 64-bit, combined with flash 64-bit its pretty damn smooth)

oh yeah and even though it says it 'might be unstable'. It has hardly crashed on me ONCE the entire 1 1/2 years i've been using it

                              moe, curly calm down!

FF is really really good...if you have a good computer. It runs smoother on win7 then XP cause it takes advantage of more hardware rendering in the win7 gui core

FF was slow at one time, but now, I can't complain. I'm on a pentium m 1.7 /1G laptop with xp pro as we speak and I've had no speed problems

are you sure you're not runing firefox 2 on a pentium 2 400 curly?

Not being oogled by google, either. Using old, pre-firefox, mozilla here- aka netscape-zilla. A nice "tight" setup, behind webwasher and a hosts file. When I need "fancy" things to work, it's Iron, with "gears.dll" deleted.

Just what the world needs. Hardware acceleration for a freaking web browser. And a porky one at that. Don't forget the slimy "political" side of google/NOzilla either. Popularity doesn't mean something's GOOD.

no HW acceleration is a very GOOD thing now a days. Websites are getting more complex, using HTML5/CSS transparency, multiple flash ads. If I disable hardware acceleration in FF I can really see a difference

as far as your youtube comment. That is flash, not FF thats doing that. now if you scroll up and down, you will see the cpu jump even higher, but thats true for any browser

FF did suck a long time ago, but its actually good now. Hell for me its very STABLE and FAST and I have the alpha version

Multiple shitty flash ads - just what everyone needs... (and why I block most of them except on decent sites like this one)

Flash video players need to die. Bring on HTML5 video.

Indeed, Firefox takes advantage of powerful hardware... which can be an issue if you don't have powerful hardware... however, even on 1gb of ram Firefox+win7 is more responsive than ff3.6 + winxp no questions asked :-)
Modern version of Firefox plus modern version of windows plus modern version of a computer = one damn fuckin fast fox... fwiw, I use waterfox on my lenovo laptpp not Firefox, along with 64bit flash, silver light, and java...

On my vista pc I still use 32-bit bcuase silverligt won't run I 64-bit n vista only 7...
Sorry bout the typos I'm on y tablet.
Oh but Firefox for android sucks so the stock browser is way better...
