My e5520 Xeons actually boot XP in about 18 seconds from power-on to logged in and ready to use.....8 cores and 24gb of RAM help.

I remember my last system though....netburst xeons with 2gb RAM, and to add insult to injury, a SCSI RAID controller.... When you hit power on that, by the time it rolled through POST, then the SCSI init, and then XP, a good couple minutes have passed....and by then I had forgotten what I even turned the computer on for...

      Whatever.

      I like 7, I'll stick with 7.
You like XP, stick with XP.

I never turn my main system off or reboot it, unless it's necessary (updates, drivers, etc.). All I do is mute the sound and turn the monitors off when I go to sleep.
It doesn't consume as much power as you might think (speedstep clocking down the CPU, similar thing for the GPU) and because all fans are 120mm at 5V in idle, it's quiet too. Loudest parts are the HDDs.

I leave the browser open most of the time (unless I'm playing a game) so I can just continue where I left off immediately.

Same here. Main PC is on 24/7 with just the monitors and sound being turned off, all others get shut down when I don't use them for anything (test installs, hardware testing blah blah).

Server wise.. well.. I rented a dedicated server a while ago simply because the internet connectivity here sucks. I'm too far out in the boonies to get anything faster than DSL 6MBit/640KBit, unless I go for cable with insane pings (horrible for gaming) and even worse upload (50MBit down, 512KBit up .. does that make sense to anyone!? )

my parents get 6mbit uverse and we have no gaming problems, thats actually very good compaired to crap DSL 1.5/256

30/512 is superb. now when you say 'for gaming', you mean playing or serving? cause that is kinda crap for serving, need something over 3mbps up at least

Even my crap (non-u-verse) AT&T DSL is 6/768 (but usually more like 2/600 when it's even working at all)

It's a disgrace having such a ridiculously slow upload in this day and age. It isn't 2006 anymore..

I meant playing. Friend of mine has 25MBit/384KBit (yes I know it's ridiculous) cable, and the lowest ping he gets is ~150ms. Nope.. that's not overseas. Within Germany.

They're trying really hard to screw you over here. Advertising 25-100MBit download speed without mentioning the ridiculous upload at all. Or having traffic limits only mentioned in the fineprint.

                  25MBit/384KBit, 50MBit/512KBit and 100MBit/1MBit ? Seriously?! fuck that..

There are some ISPs who offer proper upload speeds (T-Com ; VDSL 25MBit/5MBit or 50MBit/10MBit) but the prices are pretty steep (if it's available in your region) and if you hit the traffic limit of 100GB per month (seriously?!), they throttle you down to 6MBit/512KBit.

Fiber Optic connections? You wish.. next to nothing available for affordable prices and even those only in the really big cities.

Germany is pretty much a 3rd world country when it comes to internet connectivity..

I'm currently hosting a 10 player minecraft server 24/7 on my 640KBit upload, and I'm having no issues at all. Even a MTA server runs fine.

I'm planning to move it to my dedi server though.. for obvious reasons

                    I don't know what you're worrying about!

I only just got ADSL2+ last year, which is a HUGE improvement over the 2Mbit/128kbit I had previous to that.

Have yet to complain about download speeds, most things come through in a matter of a few minutes.

They're looking at rolling out VDSL2 soon... (already soft-launched apparently) and fibre optic is coming - sometime
