I've built a couple of PCs in Lian Li Aluminium cases. They are very good.

Well, I won't be over clocking... that's for sure. LOL

I didn't mention this earlier... but upon buying the case, I managed to pick up an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ CPU along with an Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard (full box and manual etc.) for $17... basically $15 for the CPU and $2 for the board. The seller said that the board and CPU work fine... BUT... it would freeze after the memory check. Upon inspection the whole memory section the board was littered with bad KZG caps. So... after coming home at 2AM, I sat there and recapped that board with Panny FJ caps. She's all up and running now in the Lian-Li case.

Sub $150 dual core office computer build in my terms.

I have a very nice Lian Li case given to me by a friend... more like a computer came complete with a motherboard & graphics card (9800 GT) just needed a PSU and HDD. Seems to be aluminium of some kind and very sturdy build. Got something like 8 fans in it... overkill.

Everything up and running now. I'll get some more RAM tomorrow morning. 1GB is NOT cutting it for Windows 7.

IMHO, it would have been a lot prettier if you put the optical drive one bay up and used the silver backplate cover...

                        just an opinion.

I tried that at first actually but my DVD drive kept getting jammed as it opened and especially when it was trying to close. I'll source out a silver DVD drive when I have some time.

the doors to my g4 clone case had the same issue.... a little modding and sanding (smoothing where it was catching) was all it needed.

It's 2025: do you know where your 5¼" floppy drives are?
                              by eccerr0r
                              Oh wow.

As in the other thread I was trying to revive/re-bootstrap an old Apple IIe and wasn't successful reading or writing any disk. Both drives behave similarly.

Then I was wondering, what about my PC floppy drives? I have a HH 5¼" HD drive and a combo 5¼+3½ drive. I tried formatting the disk that wouldn't work in the Apple and it didn't work in the PC either!

Then I tried a HD 5.25 disk ... it won't even touch the disk either! Just like the Apple DD disk, "Not Ready!"

Weird. Seems the PC drive is having trouble clamping...

Mounting and Handling Guidelines for TO220 TO220F TO247 Cases / Packages

The TO220, TO220F and TO247 are the popular packages for power devices because of their versatility and ability to dissipate moderate amounts of heat. This application note describes the basic guidelines for handling power MOSFETs in TO220, TO220 and TO247 packages shown in Figure 1. Please note that only mechanical and soldering guidelines are covered here. Additional precautions are required for isolating high voltage rated devices to meet safety regulations.

Need to find a 34-Pin Motherboard Floppy Header
                              by Topcat
Looking for some floppy headers.....searching the usual sources (digikey/mouser/etc) until my eyes bled, I couldn't seem to find such a beast. Yes, the silly 34 pin floppy header for a PC motherboard....

Why? Well, I was given a bunch of Optiplex 330's, which are useless systems these days....and despite what some have said, they do not respond well to the E5450 c0 stepping LGA771 Xeon mod, tried several, it never worked. They're in a standard BTX case, so I tossed some $5 Optiplex 380 boards in them I picked up on ebay, which will run ANY 5400-series Xeon with hard mods + firmware........

Retro laptop floppy drive not working
                              by Satdude
Hi, I have a laptop with a Citizen W1D, an infamous drive in the retro computing hobby. They almost always have bad belts, such was the case with this one. However, after replacing the belt, the drive seeks and spins the disk, but the laptop still gives a "No bootable disk" error. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? The heads are clean and are able to move.

                              Thermaltake TR2 Bronze 600w low 12v voltage

I have a Thermaltake TR2 80+ Bronze that's been doing strange things. It would cause the computer to shot down randomly, and measures low voltage on the 12 volt rail. From 11.5 to 11volt.

I put it on the bench with a harddrive as load, and it outputs fine with low load:
                              5v - 5.17v
                              12v - 12.17v

It has all Japanese caps, but only 1 large cap for the Input supply. No obvious signs of overheating burns or bulge. Anyone know where I should start to troubleshoot? I guess I don't want to just start by replacing...
