    Dell WebPC mouse problems

I found an old Dell WebPC with Win98 on it at Goodwill for $5 and it boots up fine, but just after the welcome screen appears I get a message saying "Windows did not detect a mouse attached to this computer" "You can now safely attach a serial mouse now" well I can't do that because there are no serial or ps/2 connectors on this thing....just usb. I tried starting in safe mode and deleting the usb controller and mouse driver in hopes that windows would reinstall them correctly after re-boot but nope. The bios has very limited settings for the controllers so no go there either....any ideas?

Is this 98 first edition or second edition? a lot of usb mouse drivers are no good for first edition.

Does the BIOS have the "Enable USB Legacy Support" option?

Yes it does and it is enabled.....I can only boot in safe mode and then I have to navigate using the keyboard, the cd-rom drive is absent in safe mode so I can't install drivers that way.....there is no floppy drive nor an empty bay to put one in and it uses 3 usb ports and NO ps/2 ports, in safe mode no usb devices will be detected if plugged in so I can't use my external floppy drive either.

Try the Maximus-Decim Native USB driver (latest version is 3.5, available here). It's basically a third-party replacement for the whole Win98 USB stack, works much better and has native support for most USB devices.

That still leaves the issue of how to get it onto the machine, though. Does it have ethernet?
