Re: Disable page file?
Yes. The only instance where it would make any sense whatsoever is if you have a 32-bit OS on a machine with >4GB RAM installed, and use a ramdisk program that can create a ramdisk above the OS's addressing limit.
Unless you happen to have a setup like that for whatever strange reason, running the pagefile in a ramdisk is absolutely counterproductive.
edit: Come to think of it, there is one other case where it could be useful, not for performance but for reliability/longevity in systems with SSDs... putting...

Re: Asus
Asus boards used to be some of the best on the market, up until around 2000-2001, when they took a sharp turn downhill both in hardware quality and support. It was around the same time they started catering to the 'enthusiast' gamer/overclocker market, and I don't think it was a coincidence. Every Asus product I've had since then has had major problems and most have failed outright. They're one of the few companies I avoid entirely now...

Huh... Schrodinger's RAM. Registered = buffered, so it's both buffered and unbuffered at the same time, until you turn it over or look closely at the keying......

Re: Biostar GeForce 6100-M7 - Need Help, No POST
Pressure could change the behavior (in fact, that's the entire idea behind the clamps they made for the Xbox360), but just prodding at it with your fingers isn't likely to do anything since it's a fairly small and uneven force... you just won't be able to assure that all the broken joints are reconnected through the full duration of the boot process.

Re: Biostar GeForce 6100-M7 - Need Help, No POST
I doubt your CPU is damaged in any way. Those Nforce 6100/6150 boards are pretty infamous for chipset failures, due to bad solder joints on the BGA chips. It's probably just coincidence that it happened to die at the same time you noticed the capacitor problem.
If you're equipped to do so, you may want to try a reflow on the north and southbridge chips. Or just salvage the caps and scrap the board.

10ns is PC66 or PC100. And that's actually a 64MB stick... those are the old 4Mx4 chips that were used on the very early SDRAM DIMMS....

Re: iMACs
I've never experienced any problem exchanging keyboards, as long as they're somewhat close to the standard 'extended' layout. For example, compare the layout of a regular 104-key PC keyboard to an Apple Pro keyboard... it's almost identical, except that some of the key labels are different... 'print screen,' 'scroll lock' and 'pause' on the PC keyboard will work as F13, F14 and F15 on the Mac, the 'Windows' key will be the 'command' key, and the 'Alt' key will be the 'option' key... the buttons are in the same place, they're just marked differently. The only physical layout...

Re: iMACs
I'd recommend trying TenFourFox. I've never used it myself, since my newest Mac is running OS9, but I've heard good things, anyway.
It's a port of the recent versions of Firefox specifically for PPC Macs, with a bunch of Altivec enhancements. It won't solve the issues with Flash, in fact, it doesn't even support the Flash plugin, but for general web-browsing it's supposed to be greatly improved from other, older browsers.Re: iMACs

Re: Asrock 939Dual-SATA2
Yep, I'm still running an Opteron 165 on a 939Dual board, and with the stock AMD cooler I get about 34C idle and 55C under load, with 3-4C difference between the cores. As long as the CPU stays under about 60C or so, you have nothing to worry about....

Re: Powerbooks...
You said, "don't ask," but before you buy anything, you really should find out exactly what software they're using that requires Leopard in a single-boot configuration. That just doesn't sound right. I can't imagine how a single-boot configuration would even matter in the first place, but in addition to that, it's been my experience that many of the so-called 'requirements' for Macs in colleges are the result of ignorance or zealotry rather than any actual technical reason. The only real exceptions I can think of are for OSX/iOS software development...

Re: Ecs Problem
Yeah, I've run into that same problem. I don't know what they do differently from other manufacturers, but they're the only ones I really have trouble with. Even the older ECS boards are alright, but once they went to the newer RoHS solder they became nearly impossible to work with. I ultimately decided that it just isn't worth my time and effort to try to fix the damn things... if I find a bad one, it goes straight in the trash.
Maybe there's some trick I don't know about, but I've tried everything I can think of, and nothing seems to have much effect...

Re: Dell WebPC mouse problems
Try the Maximus-Decim Native USB driver (latest version is 3.5, available here). It's basically a third-party replacement for the whole Win98 USB stack, works much better and has native support for most USB devices.
That still leaves the issue of how to get it onto the machine, though. Does it have ethernet?Re: Dell WebPC mouse problems

Re: Radeon x1600 Pro Vcore? (polymod intent)
As long as the caps are actually on the output side, then yes, 4V caps should be fine. The GPU voltage on a stock x1600 is somewhere in the range of 1.5V I believe.
However, you said you measured pads for a short, that would indicate that you have a multimeter, meaning that you can measure voltage too. That's the best way to be sure, just plug in the card and power it up, see what sort of reading you get across the legs of the caps (or rather, across where the caps were). It won't boot properly with the caps removed,...

Re: AOpen i915ga-plf: Capacitors ready to buy, need confirmation
Yeah, the height is likely to be an issue.
I don't know if I'd wanna drop the capacitance in this case, though, since that board looks to be a bit light on bulk capacitance to begin with... from the pictures I can find of that board, I only count seven of those 680uf caps. I'd go with the 820uf 2.5V ones instead... they're the same size as the 560uf ones, and...

Re: Slow down chipset fan
I had a Foxconn Nforce4 board with a similar 'angry bees' fan. Running it at 5V didn't work since the fan wouldn't always start reliably, but 7V did the trick, and made it considerably quieter. I ran it for a couple years like that, never had any sort of heat problem. The heat output of the Nforce4 is way overblown, even passive cooling would probably work were it not for the fact that a passive heatsink would physically interfere with the video card.
No need to bother with resistors or anything, just connect the positive lead to the...Last edited by Old Thrashbarg; 08-26-2011, 12:12 PM.

Re: Dell 745.....Here we go again!
I had a 745 come in a couple weeks ago, with four bad 2200uf/6.3v caps near the northbridge. That's not particularly unusual in and of itself, except that this particular machine was a tower. All the other 745s I'd worked on had been SFF machines, but apparently the larger ones aren't safe either.Re: Dell 745.....Here we go again!

Re: FYI: Cheap CR2032 at Harbor Freight
I noticed the other day that Ace Hardware also carries some random cheap Shenzhen Flybynight™ brand button cells... at least the local one does, but I'd assume they've all got similar stock. I forget the exact price, but it was somewhere in the range of $2-3 for a pack of six. They also had some assortment packs with quite a few common sizes.

Re: Dell 2007wfp not working - no power
Pretty good timing on this thread, I have the same monitor with the same problem, and I haven't been able to track down what's going on...
I don't know why you're having so much trouble with that clip, it's not at all complicated. It has a locking tab right above the power socket... press that tab inward (or more like 45 degrees inward/upward), and it'll pop right out....
