Google Chrome HTML5. Jerky Youtube GONE!

Just signed into Youtube HTML5 version, watching full-screen video in Google Chrome browser and no jerky video in Linux Mint (Ubuntu.based).

Looks like Adobe better smarten up Flash! I hope this is a success and prompts other online video providers to allow a choice of video players.

This is great to hear. Flash makes my Core 2 Duo work hard to keep up (the heat sink fan speeds up when I have multiple flash sites open). There is no reason something as trivial as Flash should make a C2D break a sweat. Bring on HTML5!

Funny you should mention the fan speed-up thing.
When I play youtube full-screen video on my Socket 478 P4 with Firefox/Flash the fan starts roaring. With Chrome/HTML5 no fan speed-up at all. I guess H264-compliant HTML5 is much more efficient as well.

well flash can crash if you try to run 8-10 instances anyway - pile of adobe shit that it is.

and before anybody says "how can you run 8-10 instances",
there are a lot of news websites with a fuckload of embedded youtube previews & flash advertisements on them.

          Interesting.
Do you think a PIII computer will run Youtube better with Chrome then?

My son runs an ASUS TUV4-X with 1100 Tualatin CPU, Ubuntu 9.04 Linux.

He went to YouTube and selected the HTML5 player. He got better results using HTML5 in Firefox than in Chrome.

Bottom line, the HTML5 player worked better than Flash.

Give it a try. Nothing to lose!

Re: Google Chrome HTML5. Jerky Youtube GONE!

I just tried Google Chrome yesterday, but unfortunately it didn't seem to make a difference at all with HTML5 enabled. 360p videos in IE6 played equally well in Chrome. As for 480p - seems that Youtube doesn't allow this option with HTML5. In IE6, 480p is very choppy. 720p was impossible to watch in both Chrome and IE6 (sound was good, though). In Chrome, the video was just a black box while in IE6 the video resembled a slide show with about 6 seconds between random frames of the movie.
Then again, I did try Chrome only very briefly. Maybe I did something wrong? I know HTML5 was enabled because all of the videos on Youtube had the "HTML5" written on them on the lower right corner.
                  ....
I guess 866MHz isn't enough for that kind of stuff these days.
Also removed Chrome because I really hate that stupid GoogleUpdate service.

The new Flash 10.1 has hardware acceleration. There is a noticeable performance increase. Especially in Firefox 4.0 Beta 4 with DirectX acceleration enabled in about:config. Go to youtube.com/hdstarcraft (Warning, 720p youtube videos will consume your bandwidth allotment within days). I'm using a GeforceFX 5700 and I'm pretty sure I could even get better performance with Windows 7, in which Firefox's 4 acceleration really shines.

Don't forget that "html5" video is the same idea as flash but with a different codec. Instead of using H.264, they're using X.264 or Ogg Theora or whatever they settled on.

Flash is still the dominant player, and it's going to be very difficult to knock them off their pedestal as long as they're in cohoots with Microsoft.

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

                      Difficult, but not impossible.

The tech industry is littered with former leaders now all dead. Lotus, dbase, wordperfect, pc tools, borland pascal, netscape are just the ones I can think of right now.

These were all applications I used at one time.

Re: Google Chrome HTML5. Jerky Youtube GONE!

Lotus was superior to Excel in Excel's heyday. It wasn't Lotus' inferiority which knocked them off the market, it was the fact that three weeks before Microsoft released Windows '95 (When all these companies had their products ready), they informed them that the API had changed and all these companies had to rewrite their software while here comes Microsoft ready with a whole slew of applications on the very release day (And it didn't help that the Microsoft products had good compatibility with the aforementioned products' file formats). This truly was ruthless monopoly.

Excel won with chicanery, not for its superiority. Take a copy of Lotus 1-2-3 (From the '97 suite CD, not the newer versions) and do multiple vertical lookups on 60,000 cells at the same time. Now try that with Excel. Lotus outperformed excel by a vast margin.

The same story with Netscape. The superior product does not always win.

Flash sucks, simple as that. And yes you are correct, 866MHz is not even barely enough. 720p youtube doesn't play well on my dual-PIII either which is 2x 1400MHz oc'ed to 1533. Whereas any other 720p including MKV plays perfectly...

Hardware acceleration in Flash? WHAT HARDWARE ACCELERATION??? In my eyes it is a checkbox that does nothing, it's still a CPU hog no matter which way you put it.

When it comes to ATi, it's HD3000 series and up? Erm, is Flash the new FurMark? I have a HD3870 in my main machine, a HD3450 in one of my laptops, and a 8400GS in the other i'll go check if it makes any use of those. And my dual-PIII will be getting a HD4670 AGP so we'll see.

However i'll bet it'll STILL be a CPU hog even with the acceleration. Or worse, it'll be a CPU AND GPU hog.

How much ram and what motherboard are you using?

My sons machine has 1.5GB ram, because CUV4X and TUV4X can use inexpensive SD133 ECC Server Ram. I installed 3 500MB sticks in his machine.

He's running Ubuntu 9.04. The Flash player has no video acceleration for Linux. The existing Flash player should play Youtube video on a Windows machine fairly smoothly at 1024x768. What videocard are you using. 32MB or 64MB cards should give adequate performance .
