can anyone recommend a not-so-expensive tool that will show me if a capacitor is bad? I have a bunch of Dell GX 620s that do not POST, and replacing the caps that clearly looked bad was not enough (some work now though). I think the tool is called a ESR meter or something, but I guess I just need some clarification on what and how to use.. thanks

Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
ESR meters cost anywhere between $40 and $70 (my guess).
You can search these forums for reviews of ESR meters and how people like them.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.
We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.
Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
i think he meant the scope and as far as i know those are waaaay too expensive.
at least thats what they used to tell me at school haha probably just to keep our hands off of emWe don't have a great war in our generation, or a great depression, but we do, we have a great war of the spirit. well new, they are expensive.
however, with the collapse of industry in the west, there are shitloads on ebay and the surplus market for very little now.
the same goes for lots of other pro tools.Comment

Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
Well i was just under the impression that the ESR worked On a live circuit lol thanks for clearing it up though. Ill go check them out cuz ~$50 is definitely doable for me.
Edit: so what should i be looking for when using the esr meter that will tell me that a cap is going bad?Comment

Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
Using an ESR meter in a live circuit may damage the meter. Perhaps you are looking for an ESR meter that reads capacitors in circuit without pulling. All the popular meters do. Some caps are unreadable in circuit due to nearby components.Comment

Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
Testing caps in a live circuit is a bad idea.
Testing caps in a dead circuit (without removing them) will not tell you 100% if they are bad.
To fully test a cap you need to remove it from the circuit and test the ESR and capacitance (2 tests and yes one can be good and the other can be bad).
A good ESR meter will test both.
A good multimeter will test capacitance (if it has that function).Comment

Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
Using an ESR meter in a -live- circuit -WILL- damage the meter.
In SOME CASES you can use an ESR meter for 'in circuit checks'.
[Which means a de-energized circuit with no components removed.]
- BUT - If there are any caps in parallel with the cap under test then checking with an ESR meter still requires removing the cap from the circuit.
GX620 in SFF and USFF are known for blowing some of the the 4mm and 5mm caps in addition to the typical cap problems. [They get too hot.]

Do caps leak clear looking gunk like silicon?Seen plenty of the brown stuff but opened a power supply today and there was this stuff.Replaced main power caps and one domed 1000uf 16v job that were leaking
Tests and runs fine.

Probably was silicon.
They use it to hold parts in place for machine soldering.
Clear silicon is a little unusual. Usually see white/beige/brown.Mann-Made Global Warming.

clear goop is not unusual, it is essentially hot glue used by some companies instead of silicone. I have seen it in deer made units... powmax crap as well.
what brand were the ones you opened up?sigpic

Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
The unit with the goop was a CODEGEN 300W
Maybe a tool for detecting bad caps could be the "MK 8 Eyeball?"

by tony359HI all,
I am working on some boards where all 100+ SMD caps have to be replaced (yes, they actually went bad!). I found a workflow to remove them comfortably (two irons, pre-heater and extra hot air for larger ones on ground planes).
When it comes to soldering them back, I add solder to one pad and then I use a plastic tweezer to keep them in the right place while I solder that leg.
The tweezer works - but I was wondering if there is a more "dedicated" tool or whether someone has a better idea. If it was for a bunch of caps then who cares. But because... -
by momakaNormally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow.
But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though.
I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

by eryjusHello,
First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.
I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.
I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

by Paxman_SwedeHello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
I have studied the board and...-

by captain150I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...-
