Do I Replace All Caps On The Board ?

I read all the prior forums . i am impatient and a.d.d. . so this question may have been already answered .
I'm not sure which caps to change out . i have 2 ecs k7s5a . i killed both during a cpu test . do i replace the caps by the wire wound magnets? ones by the ram ? just the big ones ? there are a bounch of small caps all over the board . most of the photo's i see show pics near the processor and ram areas .

    thank you for your time

    Rule of thumb:
Replace ALL caps 1000uF and higher, whether they show physical signs of failure or not.

Topcat, I have a similar question. I replaced all 6 of the large 2700uF capacitors with 3300uF ones (as per the badcaps website) and it fixed my problems with my MSI 694D Pro board. However, just a month later and I have POST problems again. On analysis I see that a 470uF 6.3v cap. next to the bottom pci slot has a bulging dome top.
Do I replace just that one cap. as you suggest replacing all caps. 100uF and higher?
Also, the badcaps website makes no reference to 470uF caps only that the kit contains 11 * 1000uF caps @ 10v each.

I never said they don't fail, its just not very common. On the 694, replace it with a 1000uF and see if that cures it. I've done it a time or two, and never had an issue with it.

That cap may be the one with reversed polarity on the silkscreen - it may be installed with incorrect polarity. Check the continuity on both pads carefully before installing.

            No.

            That's C390, which is a 1000uF 6.3v cap.

Thanks for that. I replaced the cap. with a 1000uF one as you suggested and now it POSTs - sort of. With one cpu in cpu socket 1 all is fine. With the other cpu in the same socket all is fine too. With both cpus in I don't even get a video signal to the monitor!
Do you think I need to replace some more caps?

Check the caps in your PSU as well. What brand and rating is it? What do you have in your system (i.e., does it heavily load the supply)?

Re: Do I Replace All Caps On The Board ?

After my last message I started to tidy up for the night and thought I would switch the psu for a 350w Antec that I bought sometime back but only used a few times. I then found that with either one or both 1GHz cpus plugged in I only get as far as the video card. It was too late (in the evening) for me to switch back my original 250w unbranded psu but I will do that first thing tonight.

To answer your second question, at this stage I am testing with a barebones system of:
one or two P3 1GHz cpus with hsfs,
                  AGP video card,
                  1GB SDRAM,
                  IDE hard drive,
                  DVD rewriter.

It is unlikely that a heavy load is being applied.

Do you think I should replace the other 1000uF caps?

Re: Do I Replace All Caps On The Board ?

OK will do. I have found a second shop selling components but it's caps are rated at a higher voltage of 16v against your website's recommended 6.3 or 10v. Are these safe to use provided the brand is OK?

Re: Do I Replace All Caps On The Board ?

tell us the brand and series of the caps they sell. each brand has many series, some are not ok. for voltage 16v will be ok, i have done that before.

I was guessing you might ask that. Could I save a trip by asking which brands to avoid?

Well I've replaced around half of the caps tonight and the cmos batter too and still freezes at just displaying the video card info. Will have to call it a night and try again another day after I've bought the remaining caps.
The kit for the MSI 694D Pro suggests a replacement exists for the 1500uF at 6.3 or 10v. For now I've used a 2200uF at 10v. Should this be OK? If not I can change it next time around.

What brand and series are you using for replacement parts? You will probably have to replace all the capacitors (at least those 1000 μF and above) before things are better.

Also, what version of the BIOS are you using? What does BIOS report for system voltages? Are the values stable?

All rubycon so far. Can't remember the BIOS version and as I said can't get past video card right now.
