My PC wouldn't POST this morning. I did some Googling and discovered this great site. I opened the case and found a bulging cap by the battery and was just wondering if I should replace every cap or just the one? It's an Elitegroup A780GM-A mobo.

Re: How Many Caps Should I Replace?
For now, replace all four. The bulged one and its three friends that are the same as it. Make sure to use high quality capacitors from Panasonic, Rubycon or Nichicon. Harvesting them from similar locations on a dead board is okay, if you have one lying around.Originally posted by PeteS in CARemember that by the time consequences of a short-sighted decision are experienced, the idiot who made the bad decision may have already been promoted or moved on to a better job at another company.Comment

Re: How Many Caps Should I Replace?
My B-I-L is an electronics tech at Plexus for 30+ years. He said replacing them wouldn't be a big deal and has all the good equipment at home to do it. I might just replace all of them if he is offering his services. I'm an electrician, not used to this tiny stuff, LOL!Comment

Re: How Many Caps Should I Replace?
In this particular case, I doubt it.
See that coil next to those caps? That screams buck regulator right there. And if there is one thing OST caps hate, it's "high" ripple current from a buck regulator.
Looks like those OST caps are RLS series, and the bulged one is likely on the high side while the 3 others are probably all in parallel and on the low side.
Anything decent low-ESR will work here. Nichicon HM, HN, or HZ from the badcaps.net store is one excellent choice. Other choices are Panasonic FR and FM, United Chemicon KZE, Rubycon ZL, ZLH, ZLJ, and ZLG, Nichicon HD. Polymers will also more than likely work, but you might have to take some voltage measurements to see what is the highest voltage on those caps. Reason for that is because most 820uF polymers in 8mm diameter are 2.5V or 4V.
If this board is littered with those OST caps, the easiest solution would be to get appropriate Nichicon HM, HN, and HZ caps from the badcaps.net store and replace all of them, Then you won't ever have to worry.Last edited by momaka; 11-15-2014, 09:45 PM.Comment

Re: How Many Caps Should I Replace?
Since the PC is open and partly disassembled, if the P/S is more than 2 years old a 5 or 10 second look through the vents and fan of the P/S with a flashlight at the output caps and maybe the 5V Stby and small start-up cap could be 5 or 10 seconds very well spent.PeteS in CA
Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

by Paxman_SwedeHello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
I have studied the board and...-

by Mattz_GTIt's feeling like this board has a case of badcaps, instability and reboots - and not wanting to necro a a very old thread, it seems the 680uF 4V are highly suspect.
I don't really want to blanket recap everything, but maybe the others around that area could do with being changed?
Equipment: I have a temperature controlled soldering station, read the bit where it says set to 400F, don't think I would have gone that high without reading that.
Spring plunger solder sucker, and some desolder braid... and a bit of good old leaded 60/40.
PS. Additional diagnostic,...-

by reweaseHi everyone,
There actually was a time when early SMPS and late bakelite housed electrolytic caps coexisted in high end industrial gear. A friend of mine just got himself a CNC milling machine form that time with its first set of now 41 year old caps still installed in the PSU... and it's malfunctioning.
Two of the caps have already leaked slightly onto the board. I have not desoldered or measured any so far but they should qualify for replacement.
Now I'm wondering what to put in there as a replacement. First idea was state of the art low-ESR Nippon KY,...-
