powering up old unused electrinics equipment

I remember in electronics school in the 1980s we learned that the
best way to damage a very old piece of electronic equipment was to
power it on with full voltage. After a long time with no power caps
go to zero ufd, which will pass the full voltage and burn out other
components. Something like that. Im looking on the internet for
info about this, but I cant find any. Do you know of any?

    tks,

Take the cover off, plug it in and watch the circuit board carefully. If you see smoke, unplug it, investigate the issue and try again.

No, the leakage current of the capacitors can increase. Often they can be re-formed. If the capacitance dropped to zero, it would be shorted or open circuit.

How old is the equipment you want to power on? If the capacitors are ancient (like Valve-era) you should remove and test them first - those ones are most likely to explode if unused for decades

Do you really need to know? have you something you want to start up?
Try on antique radio .com? or google electrolytic capacitor shelf life
assuming you are not talking wax and paper in which case antique radio may
        be the way to go.

          DONT PLUG IT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
unless its from the 80s, then go ahead.

What is it? Have you had a look inside yet for any obviously visible issues?

If you want to be on the safe side, test or replace any big electrolytic filter capacitors and any other high voltage ones. Low voltage ones should be OK to leave as is.

Late 70s would basically cover "80s" as far as electronics goes.

i wouldn't say that. i have had two radios made in the 70's pop the filter, one of which cut a gash in my arm about half the length of a lighter. all the 80's worked and didn't blow up.

If it's old stuff (but not super old like tube stuff), I say it depends if the caps have safety vents or not. If no safety vents, be careful!

LG 55UH6150- trouble powering up, then half lit screen (pictures!)
                      by valvashon
The 55" LG has been in the basement for a few months without being used. Turned it on yesterday, set came on as it should and showed a complete screen for about 5 seconds (was on a broadcast channel but no antenna was connected), then the screen went mostly dark with about 1/3 of the screen on the right lighting up with brighter lines in that lit part (sorry, no pictures of that). Power LED was cycling too, preventing the TV from fully powering up.
Pulled the back off, all boards looked OK. Pulled the LED connector, turned the set on to see if it would power up but I don't belive it...

Asus 2021 ROG Strix G17 G713 not powering on and not charging.
                      by DarKHawK
                      Hi,

I have an Asus 2021 ROG Strix G17 G713 that is not powering on and not charging. Board number is G533-6050A3250201.
When plugged in, I found that the 3.3v/5v regulator was getting extremely hot, so I removed, next I found a short on the 3.3V rail. Removed the two 3.3v mosfets and found one of them shorted, but still the short on the rail did not clear. Then I injected voltage at that rail, and found out that U60400 the 2.5v rail was also getting hot. Removing it changed the short from 0 ohms to about 5-6 ohms, then I remove a bunch of other suspect components but that did...

Paid for wrong boardview for Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F)
                      by R7027
                      Hello everyone,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F) that's not powering on, and I want to try to repair it. I'm not a repair professional and while I have learned quite a lot in the past two months when I started to learn and gather equipment, supplies and information, I still have plenty more to explore and much more to learn.

So I was looking for the boardview file for this phone the other day, and I thought found it on another site. I actually had to pay for it. I paid for both the BVR and the BVRE version. Then I found this site, and the same files can be downloaded...

Strange! Acer laptop not powering on but charging the battery (orange light on when charger and battery plugged in).

                      Hello Everyone!

I have an Acer Aspire A315-42 laptop. I generally leave it on for long time by closing down its lid (so it enters the sleep mode). Recently, it rained quite heavily in out area. And the humidity and moisture seem to be high. So one late evening, after I opened the lid and turned on the laptop, it did power on as the blue light turned on but after it booted to the desktop screen, just 5-10 seconds after both the screen and blue light went out and laptop shut down (the blue power light turned orange). And after 2-4 seconds that orange light went off and the laptop died.
