    Epoxy Buger Caps

    Howdy, I'm needing to replace these EBC's but can't seem to locate them or better yet an upgrade. The only thing I see on these little burgers is "n 5 c" then under a bit more it reads "MAX 250". I let my meter dance with the Cap and this is what came out.

    99.8nF
    Mag/Phase 1.588 KΩ
    Impedance 11.82-16.83
    j1.587 KΩ
    Admittance 4.4-5.6u
    j628.2uS

      budm, Yes I'll post some pics in a few minutes.
      My meters I use? Well ok, Fluke 45, Simpson 160, Simpson 260, Keighley 2000, Fluke 8600A, Atlas LCR45.

        I am sure you are not using the Simpson, Fluke to get all those readings.

            budm, they can only achieve part of what "can" be gathered. Any ideas on where to get the Caps I'm needing sir?

              The small yellowish/brown caps (I can see 6 of them in the picture)? Did you test them off the board or in circuit? They are Ceramic bypass caps (typical value is 0.1uF (you show the reading of 99.8nF which is within the spec of 100nF (0.1uF) and need to be tested off the board. I would suspect the electrolytic caps to be dried out by now, the ceramic cap when they failed, they failed as shorted circuit or have leakage resistance. Testing cap in circuit cannot be reliable due to other components are also connected to the cap.
              What kind of equipment is this?
              X7R, Z5U Ceramic cap.

                yellow are axial multilayer ceramic.
                probably .1uf 50v

                i buy those in large numbers to replace old broken disc and mylar caps.

                  stj, is a upgrade available? Their are a couple smaller mac's that I haven't tested and can't read the print on them unless removed. Might get a digital mono scope for USB.

                      Yeah, good question,, upgrade to what and what do you expect it to do with the upgrade?
                      The board you show in the pictures looks like some kind of motor control, we do not knw exactly what you are trying to do yet.

                        Very good y'all, its a control board for HVAC,. It don't seem to take the heat of the heater coils too well I think. Its mounted close to coils. The components need to handle humidity too. So I wanted to upgrade board.

                          If you want to help to protect it from humidity, you will need to use conformal coating which it does look like it has some on the board already. You may need better heat shield or mount the PCB further away from the heat source. May be the board has circuit function problems.

                              budm, Thanks for link, I'll read it now. Was thinking the "conformal coating" won't allow heat to dissipate from passive semiconductors?

                                Budm, Read link, thanks. It is difficult to remove the coating where needed on this board. I try to do my soldering at 350°, desoldering with the coating will take a bit more. Also, I'll be replacing the solder with SnAgCu .32 Alpha Telecore Plus, it will be safer for all concerned.

                                      stj, mac= multilayer-axiel-cap, guess my terms are just too old or bassackwards for nowadays sometimes, sorry, I can and will learn more.

                                      Are there other types of caps that are of higher quality, like barrel type?
