Re: Question about testing mesurements
stj, here is a link.

selldoor, I sit corrected, read correctly but my brain over ran the "hydro" thinking he meant an kw meter. OK, now if metalic ground is used for his place then harmonics and UN grounding via hydro meter is still plausible.Re: Question about testing mesuremen...y but my brain

Re: Question about testing mesurements
Brethen, depends on system. I had PC's that would boot from power O/l. If the supply isn't psw then damage has already trotted about the PC. I would guess sense he doesn't use battery backup w/avr that his PC isn't plugged into a home run. So this wears down the parts too, it all weakens the PC to where a power pop could damage it. jmho

Re: Capacitor storage in refrigerator
Gateway and Dell stored PC's in chilled warehouse. Consider how poor their quality is.

Re: Soldering question
Oopps, sorry Jeff answered for myself. Use your new Hakko and some braided desoldering wire, heat & pull braid over legs.

Re: Soldering question
Jeff, To get ic's off I use my Desoldering Station's hot air gun, turn up temp to what's needed and turn up the pressure also same way. I would of already had the correct nozzle on it, then it will melt both sides of solder, then lift ice out with ESD safe tweezers.

Selldoor, I think that would be a given, eh?
8ternity, make sure you have latest firmware in Atlas.

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
Update: Removed PCB after unplugging the spegatti life support. The covering that is sprayed onto parts & PCB is making me choke a bit (even on O²). I have never dealt with spray coatings, been setting station temp at 350° and using sucker. I don't like to heat up PCB or parts but it takes a bit of time to get old solder to melt with spray coat. Should I increase temp? Please advise, still young enough to learn. Here is today's pic, will I need to remove all the ceramic bypass caps for ID sense numbers didn't match brands or can you guess the smaller one?...

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
Exactly, them metal frames and hard plastic drawers sounded like chalkboards being scraped, then drawers would crack if I looked at them wrong!...

OK, I thought you had retina scan just to get into your shack, lol.
I hate the scraping sound of them hard plastic drawers, maybe better units are available nowadays?

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
stj, Thanks, guess I'll test all these from PCB and try to replace what is bad.
Question, How do you guys store your cap/resistor's? I've used plastic craft containers, seen 3-ring binders used for resistors.

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
stj, mac= multilayer-axiel-cap, guess my terms are just too old or bassackwards for nowadays sometimes, sorry, I can and will learn more.
Are there other types of caps that are of higher quality, like barrel type?

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
Word correction messed up one of the meter names above, thought I would correct it for those who may not know, its "Keithley 2000".

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
Budm, Read link, thanks. It is difficult to remove the coating where needed on this board. I try to do my soldering at 350°, desoldering with the coating will take a bit more. Also, I'll be replacing the solder with SnAgCu .32 Alpha Telecore Plus, it will be safer for all concerned.

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
budm, Thanks for link, I'll read it now. Was thinking the "conformal coating" won't allow heat to dissipate from passive semiconductors?

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
Very good y'all, its a control board for HVAC,. It don't seem to take the heat of the heater coils too well I think. Its mounted close to coils. The components need to handle humidity too. So I wanted to upgrade board.

Re: Epoxy Buger Caps
stj, is a upgrade available? Their are a couple smaller mac's that I haven't tested and can't read the print on them unless removed. Might get a digital mono scope for USB.
