Fake / counterfeit capacitors are getting better

Usually, there is always something visually wrong with a counterfeit capacitor.

However, these capacitors look perfectly genuine on the outside.
There seems to be nothing wrong, bung is correct, vent is correct, printing is correct and high quality.

Luckily, always when I buy capacitors from questionable distributors (china) I measure them with my ESR / Capacitance meter.
This time I noticed something weird: these 1000uF capacitors only measure approx 500uF.

Dont be like me, always buy your capacitors from reputable distributors or straight from the manufacturer!

      Bung is not correct.

United Chemicon bung as far as i know has channels in the form of a T:

These are 10mm width capacitors, and according to KY datasheet, the bung is correct: 10mm and smaller capacitors have this type bung.
Only 12.5mm and wider capacitors have the T-style bung.

Many fake Nippon Chemicons especially from China market, do not match the datasheet specifications especially when it comes to case size/dimensions. Many were shorter than what's printed in the datasheet...

Maybe it's just that I haven't worked with lytics for a few years, but there's something about the lettering of the date/lot code and the tolerance and temperature rating that doesn't look quite right.

Even _legit_ caps soemtimes have poor or inconsistent lettering, so unless the lettering is an obvious giveaway, like if the font is wrong or if it's really fuzzy then it's not a sure way in itself to identify fakes. The lettering on these is pretty darn good. I wouldn't be surprised if the sleeving and bungs were sourced from UCC themselves. Remember, Japan is undergoing an economic recession and a massive nuclear problem in Fukushima. I wouldn't put it past certain elements of their corporations to start selling a little on the side to make a few extra bucks.

Yeah, I noticed that too, especially the temperature markings, the font just looks wrong. It seems too tall and not wide enough like the real NCC caps.

Just to rule out that my esr meter was bad, I checked the capacitors with a capacitance meter I also have. The results are same.

I also took a better shot of the datecode. The upper cap is the KY, lower cap is very old but genuine 470uF 25V LXF-series capacitor.

(I trimmed the lead on the KY myself so it would fit the capacitance meter, that wasn't like that when I received it.)

It might just happen to be that you got ones that were sitting for a while, maybe in a hot and/or humid environment, and they just went bad for no reason. If they are new, (I don't know how to read NCC date codes) then maybe you could take one apart to see inside. If the insides look OK, then, well.., you could try seeing if NCC will take a look at them for you!

Just dissected one. It was all nice and wet.
I was thinking too that they may be old and stored wrongly, but even then I dont think they all would have failed like this.
I have ten of these caps and every single one of them measure something between 494 - 501uF and ESR 0.02 - 0.04 ohms.

Perhaps try reforming them... i.e. slowly bring up the voltage on them through a resistor up until full rated voltage is reached, and leave there for 24 hour or longer. Then see if that has improved the capacitance.
These look way too good to be fakes IMO (if they are, I give my applause to the Chinese who made these).

maybe the ebay fakers ran into a huge qty of 470uf 35v ncc and resleeved them for whatever they had demand for?would explain the bung looking ok.
the font is a bit off on those supposed 1000uf.check leakage at 35v and see if in spec for a 470@35

Well, I made couple of orders on ebay from unknown sellers, since there was some problem with ordering from egekecu.
Soon I'll have capacitance meter so I will update posts with info on real capacity measurement.
And here they are(some of them; I will post others latter):

1800uF 6.3V supposedly Panasonic on the left and on the right I've put some genuine used ones from dead motherboards

Look at the bungs there ^ ! Pretty good fakes. Do their vents look like they do on real Panasonic caps as well?
I wonder if they are just re-sleeved real Panasonic caps.

I have capacitors like this one in the photo. There are differences between other Elna series, I attach foto of Elna RE3. On this green capacitors series is not specified! Fake?...

After updating motherboard capacitors, what to do next (Asrock K7VT2, SOLTEK SL-75FRN2L)

Hi, I have some 32 bits computer motherboards that need repair, as they fail to
                                          power on.

                                          Here are some examples :

(N.B. "capacitors" indicated here are electrolytic capacitors located in the onboard
                                          switching supply area).
                                          (N.B. #2 : I could not find a 3300 microF aluminum-polymer with a higher voltage
                                          than 6.3 V.)

1 - Motherboard #1 : this is an Asrock K7VT2 (socket A) that still works well. To put it on test
                                          I replaced capacitors with aluminum-polymer.
                                          3300 microF/6.3 V. x 4 replaced by 3300 microF/6.3 V. (KYOCERA...

AA and AAA battery charger capacitors?

hey all, iv got my favourite battery charger here which iv had for many years probably 15 years now or maybe even more. it still works good but thought id open it up to clean the dust out of it, lots of dust inside but now its clean and noticed 4 capacitors inside it and wondered if i should replace them.
                                          it has inside:
                                          2 x 47uf 16v caps 105c branded as Su'scon (lol sounds sus to me)
                                          2 x 470uf 16v LZ105c branded as G.Luxon

not heard of these brands are they any good?

iv attached photos of the charger and the board inside for an idea on the type of...

Fake Nichicon capacitors with almost-perfect sleeve?

Fake Nichicon capacitors with an almost-perfect sleeve?

Same font, perfect logo, same size of the sleeve. The air vent looks okay. The diameter of the capacitors is correct per datasheet.

It truly looks like the real thing.
I doubt that you would distinguish it from a genuine one.. if it wasn't for the bung.

Shall we be afraid, at this point, that even the bung can be replicated?...

Panasonic switching power supply daughter board has two 27uf @ 50 volt capacitors which I do not keep in stock

I did not have any 27uf @ 50 volt capacitors but one nice thing is that it has enough room for two capacitors in parallel a 22uf and a 4.7uf @ 50 volts 22 plus 4.7 equals 26.7uf which so very close to 27uf I will show some pictures of it sometime tomorrow

This is one of the shit est boards I seen in a very long time and it was the daughter board the traces just lifting off the board I had to use the capacitor leads to repair the the traces and the main board is not any better because I had to repair several traces for the daughter board to the main board

                                          After all of...
