    ABIT VL6 problems....

    Hi,

I recently started having strange behavoir out of my system. It started when the system would go into standby and I would try to wake it. All I would get was a "click,click,click,click,etc... reboot"

Then it started happening when I would let the system sit idle for a while but try to access it before it actually went into standby. The same thing would happen as soon as I touched the mouse or the keyboard. "click,click.....reboot"

Then it started happening anytime I let the system sit idle for about a minute. If I was typing and stopped to think... it would go into its click-reboot.

Then it started happening even while I was actively using the system.

Most recently... I get no power on startup to the CPU or the CPU fan. The APG port is getting power because the video card fan will run. Other devices connected to the power supply start up. you can hear the HDD turn on.

I started looking over the VL6 and several capacitors seem to be either bulging or are outright leaking something. I have seen on other posts in this forum that this could be exactly what is causing my problem.

Amazingly some of the photos of bad capacitors for the VL6 shown in this forum are the exact same ones that appear bad on mine.

I have attached a photo of one bad capacitor near the power connector. what does this one do in particular?

Do my reboots sound like bad capacitors? Should I consider replacing them or just buy a new board? I would like to fix this board if its possible.

    what do you guys think?

    thanks in advance, John

Those caps are defintely toast. The brown crap all over the board is dried electrolyte. It'll come off fairly easy. Replace all caps 1000uF and up, and I'd be willing to bet the board works like new. I've recapped quite a few VL6's, and never had one end up a dud.

    Good Luck.

the electrolyte will clean off nice with cotton buds/q-tips and alcohol. you will want to do that after removing caps around the electrolyte because some will be underneath the caps.

post some pics when you succeed recapping the board.

        Re: ABIT VL6 problems....

Would you say my reboot symptoms fit the problem of bad capacitors?

Is what I'm experiencing exactly what you would expect?

next big question.... Can someone provide me with a BOM and Schematic for the VL6? What are the capacitor designators I should change out and could you recommened the best replacement parts to use? (...by value and mfg ...I'm not a EE but a friend of mine is.) Also, where do I purchase these components?

        thanks,
        John

Your reboot symptoms are very commonly seen with badcaps, but you should check your powersupply also, failed caps in it could have hasted the failings of the crapcaps on your mainboard...

You should exchange all caps of the same manufacturer to begin with

And if there is more than one manufacturer replace the others also if it is not made by one of the good caps manufacturers...

You can leave all caps below 1000uF unless they actually are bulging, most oftenly they will be ok because they see much less stress than the larger rated caps do...
